Thanks again Tony,
I have a few book references that show the same thing. The photos I have of Turner and SFS show him by the prop, not the whole plane.
I just ordered his book, Mustang Pilot.
But, I think I have this figure out now!
Tamyia's kits are really accurate, for the most the part. The instructions state SFS from being from Fall, 1944, with Turner having 20 kills marks. Most references say he had between 11 and 13. The 354th FG would allow pilots to count ground kills for the markings, but they would not be counted towards that magic number of "5" for an ace.
Turner's book should clear that up.
Also, and this is brilliant from Tamyia, they have TWO decals for kill marks, #61 and #62. To make this an international kit, they ONLY show #61, which is the PC swastika. To get the historically correct swastika, you have to add #62.
ErrorMaster has decals for SFS, and I have no idea who designed them, but they should be fired.
And, I have found references showing the 356th FS planes with invasion strips both up the sides, and stopping under the star markings. Having been a Soldier (I am retired now), I know that ground crews most likely put these on at the last minute. Some confussion was bound to happen, resulting in the crew chiefs making the best decision they could to meet the C/O's intent.
Finally, the link I gave, http://www.midwaysailor.com/photos/mustang-sallee.html shows an airshow SFS. Not necessarily historically accurate.
And again, from what part of SFS history was that plane based on? Forget which year, in a fast moving combat environment it would be based on a single day.
