Need help with preshading

My F-100 will be painted natural metal. I want to preshade by airbrushing solid dark color, then airbrush alluminum plate panels over that.
I found an article online where a guy uses gloss green as the foundation, but I don't have any gloss greens-they are all matte.
What other color can I use as the base? How about gunmetal? Gunmetal is a grey so dark, it almost looks black.
