Hail Mary for a part solution
Posted by iSteve on Monday, April 4, 2016 1:14 PM

Hi All,

Been woorking away at my new tool Airfix Hurricane for my first IPMS show (WIP pics to come) and a very bad thing happened.

I guess I got a little water with my Alclad paint and when I airbrushed aluminum on the inside of the left wheel cover I got some blistering. No problem, thought I, I'll just take it off with EZ Off Paint and Decal Remover, like I've done a hundred time before. Well, there must be something special about the plastic Airfix uses because as I was brushing off the excess paint, a bit broke off, then another, then another. Plunged the part in water to stop the reaction and did the best I could to mend it, but I may not have the skills to clean it up back to a semblance of its former self and would hate to have wasted all the effort I put in thus far only to get scratched from contention because of this flaw. I could present it with the wheels up, but pilotless Hurricanes in flight are more in the Science Fiction category. I could try to mash the damaged wheels down cover with the wheels up cover, but that would mean risking destroying most of what I was able to salvage.

I thought I would try and ask my fellow modelers on the outside chance someone could spare the part - with compensation, of course.

Anyone?

Suggestion ;

You are talking about a landing gear door right ? Well , Here's an idea .Take some plastic sheet the same thickness as the cover and then take the good one and make a Mirror image of the part .Scratch a little here and there and Viola ! One new gear door !

The plus ? You will have added to your skill-set and repaired a Hurricane that might win !

Call Airfix for replacement parts.

Hi Tank,

I am considering that, including building up the inside of the closed version to match. However, there is a good amount of detail both on the outside and inside which makes it tricky at best to scratch. We'll see.

I may even just buy a second kit, but the usual suppliers are showing out of stock and I've only got about 3 weeks left.

Another option is heavy weathering.

Are we talking 1/48?

If so, I believe I have the extra doors that came with it to pose it in flight/closed, as I made mine with the gear down. I also have a Pegasus 1/48 kit I built to test paint, and I just haven't thrown it away yet. I can take a look at the gear doors on that and compare them to my AIrfix one and see if they are close enough to match.

If 1/72, I'm afraid I can't help ya.

Oh, I see you have the wheel-closed door, too. I'll still check the Pegasus. I may have even built it with the gear closed, which would mean Ihave an open door somewhere.

Hi Brandon,

Yes, it's the 1/48 new tool. I'm building it with the gear down and it's that door that got buggered. If you could spare a set that would be awesome. And I'd be happy to compensate you for parts and shipping. Please let me know!

Hi Stephen,

I found the Pegasus gear legs, and the doors are molded to the legs themselves. They feel a little thick, but comparing them as best I can to the doors on my completed Airfix Hurricane, they seem like the same profile. I'm happy to send them to you if you want to PM me your address.

I'm assuming you have the other legs for in-flight for the Airfix one? If not, I can find those and send them, too, if you want to try to modify them.

Hey Brandon,

I can't thank you enough for hunting for the part and your generosity!

However, earlier today I managed to find a second Airfix Hurricane and I should have it by Friday or Monday at the latest. I figure I'll use the door from the new kit and ask Airfix for a replacement. It then won't matter how long it takes for the part to come.

Thank you again Brandon for all your help. Hopefully, I can return the favour one day Smile

All the best,

Stephen
