Finished - Stephen Litjens BF 109 E White 5
Posted by AndrewW on Monday, April 4, 2016 5:27 PM

This is my latest, Tamiya's 1:48 109 E3 marked out as Stephen Litjens' White 5 of 4./JG53 in autum '39.  I was really stricken by the abnormal markings, and purchased a set of Montex paint masks for the markings.

I replaced the prop, exhausts and wheels with Ultracast gear, replaced the cannons with Master barrels, applied Eduard etch throughout.  I painted it all with Vallejo's model air, and had my first real go with salt weathering and dot filtering.  As well, it was my first go with black basing.

The limited decals I used were a set of stencils from Eduard.

The antenna wire is of course EZ line, as is the canopy hold back wire.

At the same time as this piece, I've been working at an Eduard 109 E3 to mark out for Erich Mix from Stab 1./JG53.  I hope to start painting that any day now.  I plan to set the pair of aircraft side by side in a dioramma for the sitting war era, just as both camo patterns were so abnormal.

I'm also debating picking up a German staff car to stick into the scene, but I'll see how adventurous I get.

Thanks for looking, happy modelling.

Andrew

Nice to see more builds from you again Andrew. Are all the markings sprayed on? They look nice and crisp for sure. I really like the underside weathering too. All I got for critique is the RLM 65 looks to be a bit too dark/ blue looking, but that could be the camera/monitor's fault.

Outstanding build. I can see why the markings for this aircraft intrigued you.

That's a great looking E-3.  I do really like that particular scheme.  Nice weathering.
