Next up I will tackle the old Monogram F-101 Voodoo.I was really surprised when the instructions said to join the fuselage halves in step 2 after you put in the fuel vent.Never had one that did that before!

Sweet. I think this is a really good kit. I have the Revell rebox and plan on rescribing it and using an Eduard PE set. The cockpit must fit from the bottom huh? Hope the intake assembly goes smooth for you...

To improve the fit I separated the intake ducts.  There were a few other areas that needed attention as well.  I did a build log on it when I built one, it's here:

Watching with great interest. I too have this kit in the stash with the Canadian markings and will build it up as a CF-101. They have one here at the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada. I have some pics - just need to get them uploaded.

I think this kit was from one of the first production runs as I do not believe any filler will be necessary! The fit of the fuselage halves is remarkable.

Very cool! I think the VooDoo is my favorite 'Century Series' fighter. I've got one of those kits somewhere in the stash.

The intake/airduct system may have a hard to fill seam when assembled.Might have to use 2 part epoxy to fill the seam if it remains visible after it is installed in the lower wing. We shall see!

Just curious, how well do you feel the Ross glue works on styrene?

I only use it on canopies. For general assembly I use CA.

The epoxy eliminated the inner seam and I glued the starboard upper wing section to the lower.I like how Monogram designed the wings so as to prevent any seams on the leading edge.

Got the wing unit together and the fit was quite good.Had to add a small amount of filler in a few places but no big deal.

Hi Philo!  So when you said the epoxy eliminated the inner seam, how did you do that?  I see you painted both the upper and lower halves of the intake trunks and then what?  You used epoxy instead of any other type of glue?  Did the epoxy "squoosh" out and eliminate the seam?  Did you have to do any sanding?  I'm going to guess not because then that would have eliminated your paint job along the seam area.  After you glued the intake halves together, did you have to go back and do any extra touch-up work on the paint job?

I've got the Voodoo in my stash as well and would love to be able to eliminate or at least greatly reduce the seam.  Intake seams are right up there canopy framing when it comes to things I hate to paint.

Eric

PS.  For the record, Howard Johnson is right!  A Blazing Saddles/Mel Brooks quote is appropriate and welcome anytime.  It's twue!  It's twue!

What I did first was to apply a liberal amount of epoxy to both intake halves and clamped the parts together. Then to make sure the seam was eliminated, I applied more epoxy at the joint. When the epoxy cured,I repainted the ducts flat white.Worked well.

A long time back there was a good discussion about what changes/modifications needed to be made to make this kit into a Canadian VOODOO. I have done the Hawk One Canadian VOODOO and have decals for the Lynx and Electric Jet (all black Canadian VOODOO) Does anyone know if there are decals for the lark (red and blue) Canadian VOODOO. I found this kit to be a nice build. There is a real F-101B on display at the Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti MI.

I seem to recall that article in one of my back issues of FSM.I will have to go through them and try to find it.I will use the Texas ANG decals included it in the kit!

I had a bit of a delay due to my youngest graduating from high school(3.88 gpa NHS) and the holiday cookout.Assembled and installed the cockpit.I found it easier to install the rear instructment panel after the cockpit was mounted up because the radar scope has to fit to the side of the fuselage.

Philo

These old Monogram kits are fantastic. Even though the molds are decades old, they still have excellent molded detail. Yours is looking very good and you should not have any problems. Mine had minor waves along the seam lines but it was all easily corrected with sanding and polishing.

I did mine a while back for a NMF GB. It did not need any filler at all. I used Tenax in a Touch N Flow applicator which after sanding makes all the seams invisible. I used Alclad for the NMF, mixing two colors to vary the tone in a few panels. I also used the kit decals that had to be tamed with Solvaset. It was done OOB except for the fuselage light which I replaced with a gadget from Michaels or HL.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but just wanted you to see mine
