Magnum PI chopper
Posted by Darren Roberts on Thursday, May 26, 2016 6:27 PM

I was digging through my stash when I happened upon an old Hobbycraft OH-6A that I had picked up in a raffle. It was missing interior parts, so I thought about what I could do with it. I decided to paint the interior of the windows dark gray and paint it like TC's chopper on Magnum PI. The fit was, shall we say, less then desirable, especially the windows. In the end, though, I had a bunch of fun building and painting it, and it brought back good memories from the 80's.

Oh wow, that's beautiful!!! I'd thought about doing one but the masking always scared me off. Must have been a pain to get the stripes right over the complex curve of the fuselage (whatever you call it on a 'chopper) but they look perfect.

I love that box you posted SP, says right there 'T.C.'s chopper but it has two photos of Selleck and not one of Roger Mosley (aka T.C.)...

That's a happy looking model and looking at it has brightened my day a few times now.

Nice workmanship on the paint job. Like Gamera, I think I'd be intimidated to try it.

YES! I love it Darren. Very impressive paint job. That is really top notch. Your kit sure brought back a ton of memories as me and my Fraternity brothers would watch Magnum P.I. religiously every Thurs night.

A nice touch would be to put a bullet hole somewhere in the canopy glass. That was always a running occurence on the show.Wink

Thank You for sharing with us. Joe

Lol Jester, I started humming the theme song too!

Joe, I like the idea of a bullet hole there as well!

That's a great idea and a nice finish, and well done, especially since you didn't have the kit with the markings Wink

I think we can all agree thst he did a great job and the masked stripes are probably superior to the Revell kits decals

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone. I'm glad this could make your day a bit brighter. I hummed that theme song through the entire build! The painting wasn't too bad. I masked off the clear areas, primed it with Alclad White Primer, them sprayed the yellow. When that was dry, I masked off the yellow stripes with Tamiya tape and sprayed the orange. Last came more masking and the brown. I had forgotten to prime the tail, but I lucked out and found one picture with it brown, so I went with that. BTW, I love the bullet hole idea!

Here are a couple of Magnum PI trivia tidbits.

John Hillerman (Higgins) is actually from Texas and has a serious Texas drawl. If you've ever watched Blazing Saddles, you'll hear what he really sounds like. His portrayal of a British character earned him rave reviews for acting.

Tom Selleck was Steven Spielberg's initial choice for Indiana Jones, but because he was just starting to film Magnum, he had to turn down the role. Just think of how different his career might have gone had he taken the Indy role.

Very clean & crisp paint work! I had the kit back in the 80's good to see it again, the only thing that got me was it showed the correct 500D on the box but was a OH-6A kit in the box.

Very well done. I think Higgins would approve.

I'm almost embarrassed (but not quite) to say I have the Revell Magnum Ferrari 308 in my stash. That helo is an awesome reminder of arguably my most favorite show of all time.

Those are selling for mad money on Ebay. Nice work . Always nice to see something unusual.

Did you know that when CBS cast Tom Selleck in that life changing role, they and his agent couldn't find him for a couple of days to let him know.  Although he had worked sporadically as an actor before, he was out working on a landscaping crew.

Darren,

Nice paint job!  The skids need some work though.  Big Smile

Maybe we need an "80s Group Build".  You could try your hand at this.

Something to think about.

Although he had worked sporadically as an actor before

If I recall correctly, one of his earlier roles was as one of the dead bodies suspended on wires in the movie "Coma".

Yeah, another dark haired Hollywood heart throb... Of course we have all heard the story of how he was supposed to be Indiana Jones as well...
