Wow, she came out great, even more impressive of course knowing she's a Glenco model!

Oh now that is purdy!!! I, too, love those off-the-beaten-path subjects and kits. There are lots of significant subjects out there that are woefully underrepresented. It's refreshing when some of them see the light of day. Your X-1B is looking really sharp and I can't wait to see it when it's all done!

Thanks.   Yes they are very crude models,  but with lots of scratch building possibilities,  it now has all brass pitot tubes and fuel dump tubes and a scratch built cockpit and all the over done surface detail has been sanded off and replaced with etched panel lines.

Beautifully done Alclad finish.  Yes

I also like Glenco models for their subjects but as you know, their quality and engineering can be a nightmare.

A few more pictures,  added some different Alclad tones,  not sure I like the dull mid section, althought this is where the liquid oxygen is stored so it frosts over.   I may try to brighten it up slightly.

Looking good!  I appreciate folks who will build a kit that is less than state of the art.  I build kits from Glenco, Williams Bros, etc.  when no other kits are available of a subject I really want to build.  It is still usually easier to add detail and correct inaccuracies of such a kit than to go completely scratch.  I am also glad when such kits are available, when no other mfgr will tackle the subject.

Also, I have found that even with those companies whose kits generally have less than steller reputation, there are still some kits that are real gems.  Maybe not super detail, but good accuracy and good fit and quality.

Ok  I jumped ahead a little as I didn't have a camera ready,  but here she is in gloss black model master acrylic,  and then in Alclad polished aluminum.

now on to more layers of alclad.

X-1B Glenco wip
Posted by falconmod on Monday, June 6, 2016 12:44 PM

Decised to try to make a silk purse from a sows ear.  Started with a Glenco X-1B.  Started by sanding off all the hugh rivit detail and making a scratch built cockpit.  i got a ejection seat from a monogram P-80 thats really close to the real thing it just needs to have some of the detail sanded off.  Added bird shot so it won't sit on it's tail.

I also will rescribe all the panel lines consistant with a three view drawing I got from the archives.

lots of sanding ahead.
