1/48 ERA-3B WIP
Posted by Darren Roberts on Thursday, June 9, 2016 8:50 PM

I put the EA-3B on hold for the moment as I wanted to get an update set out for the Trumpeter ERA-3B. There's quite a bit missing from the Trumpeter kit, and it actually is for only a couple of airframes with parts included in the kit. The SB set will be more inclusive, including the ALQ-76 pods and pylons. I've got all my test cast parts on the model and they look the part. One interesting thing is the nose. I used my resin nose that I've used for all my other conversions, but apparently Trumpeter made this fuselage tooling different from the rest. The resin nose was actually a bit small and took some blending in to fit better. I tested it on my other Skywarrior kit, and it fit fine. I'm still undecided on markings.

Hello Darren!

As for the markings, maybe go with the one with the red star on the tail?

Those rare converted/top secret birds are sure cool to build, but I imagine you also need "special sources" for your research - those babies kept on changing, with new antenna added every now and then and no two aircraft exactly alike - so how do you manage this?

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Paweł

It's still sitting on my shelf looking like that. Unfortunately, school started...and then the Tamiya Tomcat came out. Big Smile

Looking great, cant wait to see it finished. My Dad was on EA3Bs during his stint in the Navy, I'm biased towards the whale.

Darren, I'm currently starting the TA-3B and I have a question about the main gear and how it goes together. Is there a possiblity that I could get a better shot of the main gear legs? From the instructions, for me it's hard to tell exactly how the pieces go together. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hello!

You might want to check this link out - lots of good info on the Whale. Blease be sure to scroll down and look the link farm up - there's one article devoted solely to the landing gear:

I'll see if I can get a picture of that area. The first time I built it I had the same problem. After building a couple of them, it becomes a bit clearer.
