Your daughter has good taste in boyfriends too. Nice guy. I remember building my future F-in-L the old Monogram P-61. Friends for life.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks for all the replies and comments gentlemen - feels good to get feedback from fellow modelers. Johnnyk - Your P-47 is beautiful!! I gotta try the steel wool  next time. Now that I've got the "bug" back I'll post my next project soon.

Happy modeling

Mark

Mark,

Go to this page to see how I apply Bare Metal Foil:  WIP 1/48 Revell P-47N NMF using metal foil and rivet tool

The paper blending stick is a great tool for burnishing the Bare Metal Foil. It allows you to stretch the foil and it gets rid of all wrinkles. I no longer use a straight edgr to make the rivets. Making rivets freehand is quicker and easier.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

If that is the Krylon Aluminum I think it is, that is the shiniest rattle can stuff I have ever used.  It is so shiny the finish must be flawless, 'cause it shows every flaw- yours looks great!

That is not paint. The entire model is covered in Bare Metal Foil. The foil has a natural grain, so I rotated the grain on certain panels. That is why it appears that there are different shades of color. After I applied the foil I enhanced the grain by rubbbing it with steel wool. I then used an embossing tool to make the rivets. When the foiling was finished I weathered it with an acrylic wash. I am currently working on a Korean War P-51 using the same technique.

Great looking model.  I am a big fan of using Bare Metal Foil for a natural metal finish.  Only metal looks like metal.

Hey nice model and cool story! That same kit was one of my first 'serious' kits back in the mid '80s too.

Thanks for the pics and I'm glad you're back into it. You've done such a good job you've inspired me to dig out my P-38 from the stash and give it a go.

Outstanding work on the older P-38 Mark. It looks excellent. Latch onto that modeling *** and give 'er all she's got. You do fantastic work and I would sure love to see more from you.

Excellent work! I am building the P-39 of Monogram's that is nearly the same vintage. It's a sweetheart of a kit.

Nice work Mark, I'm getting to tie into the same kit. I hope you get the building bug and stay with it.

Welcome back Mark! Glad to have you with us again!

Great job on the P-38.  Wish I could do BMF like that. Maybe some day.

Nice job Mark,

Recieving a model as a gift is like a shot of adrenaline that motivates me to get modelling done.  For me - I think it has to do with knowing someone will be interested in the outcome.

Hope it keeps those modeling juices flowing.

  • Greetings fellow modelers!
  • It's been a very long time since I have had time to build a model - and I felt I lost my ***! I would sit at my workbench and try to get into it but ended up just lookin at the great models posted here and on other forums.
  • Then a week or so ago my daughters boyfriend gave an old old Monogram 1/48 scale P-38 Lightning kit. (Original molding date 1961!)  He said he's had the kit for years and didn't think he would build it. Opening the kit brought on a wave of nostalgia - I had this kit when I was a kid and barely got it assembled. I thought the issue was with me, not the kit.
  • Well, I've foundout the issue was definately with the kit! SoI thought here's my chance to jump start my *** and try to do this right. After tons of carving, carefull glueing, sanding sticks, and several blows with a hammer I got the kit together!
  • I base coated with Krylon aluminum spray and then remembered I had some Bare Metal foil lying around so I applied it to almost the whole airframe. I left some areas uncovered (flying surfaces, flaps, etc...) to add some contrast, then applied some of the kit decals and named her after my daughter.
  • I surprised them both when I gave the finished kit to her boyfriend and he's got it hanging in his place at college. Their reaction really got my enthusiasm back. I've started other projects and hope to post more often.
  • Thanks for listening and as always - Happy Modeling!
