Been a while... Just Completed a P-51D Tribute...
Posted by Raymond G on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 8:08 PM

Hey everyone… I hope everyone is doing well. Civil Air Patrol has taken up a good bit of my time as of late, so I haven’t had a lot of bench time. I’m hoping to start working on that however.

A friend of mine just stepped down as the commanding officer of a CAP squadron. Being that the name of the unit was the Mustangs, and given his years of service to the organization and the community, I decided to build him his own stallion.

There’s a few scratch build items on this build, such as the prop and the gear up attitude. I used the Revel 1:48 kit. It’s okay, but I think I’m going to go with Trumpeter the next time. There were a few fit issues, especially with the gear. That said, it went together pretty well.

The only huge problem I had occurred when I shot a coat of clear coat on the first attempt. The only thing I can think of is the humidity was high and it fogged up on me bad. So, I stripped the paint and redid it. I actually liked paint job a lot better. I actually used a 2 parts Tamiya Flat Aluminum to 1 part Tamiya Sky Gray. After it had time to dry, I buffed it out with a soft cloth.

So, for better or worse, here’s “The Iceman Cometh…”

I actually opened up the manafold exhaust using a hot needle. The two "kill flags" are actually Civil Air Patrol find ribbons. Phil actually has three, but couldn't get one confirmed due to a paperwork snafu...

Phil was commander for three years, June 13 - June 16. I did fix the small mistake... Oops.

The tribute was based on the squadron patch...

And Phil with aviation legend Mary Feik at last years Texas Wing Conference. Sadly, we lost her about a month ago.

We presented this to Maj. Phil Rains a few weeks ago at the squadrons Change of Command. Growing up in Civil Air Patrol during the Top Gun days, we all had "call signs." Phil's was, of coarse, Iceman. To say he was touched is an understatement.

I hope everyone enjoyed the build... Off on an Albatross D-5 for my wife now...

Contructive comments are welcome... Raymond

Ray, welcome back!

The Mustang turned out fantastic! Very glad that Maj. Rains was touched by this extraordinary gift! Looking forward to seeing more of your builds.

Nice to see you back in the saddle Ray. =] Great looking build and kudos on the base! I think it makes a huge difference how a thing is presented. If you were ever looking to do another mustang in the future, you really can't do better than the Tamiya kit. I promise you'll never look back. ;]

Again...glad to see you back at it.

Thanks for all the comments. Like I said, Phil was floored by the model. I've got a couple of ideas of how to do the prop a little better next time. I think I'm going to try it on the Albatross I'm working on... I'll try and have WIP pics up on that in the next few days. Raymond

Yes, very nice tribute build, your gesture made me smile on a day when little else was working.  Looks like you did a little surgery on the ailerons and building a kit wheels up is damn difficult to get right. Having built this kit alongside the Tamiya kit for comparison, I can say with no hesitation the Tammy Pony won for fit and detail but...I have a soft spot for those old Revellogram kits.

Science is the pursiut of knowledge, faith is the pursuit of wisdom.  Peace be with you.

Reasoned... I hear you. I was up all night watching the news. I have a friend who is a 25 year vet of CAP that's a SWAT instructor. He got called into that mess last night for Mutual Aid, then worked his normal shift at 7 this morning. My wife and I just watched the news and teared up through most of it.

Thanks for the kind words. I kind of wish I would have done a traditional WIP on this one. Yes, I cut and repositioned the ailerons, elevator and rudder to give the mustang a slight port climb. The wheels up was tough. Lots of putty and sanding on the mains and, like I said, scratch build on the tail. I liked the challenge, but it was a pain in the butt big time!

I want to do another one for me, but I'm going to do the Tamiya. I've heard to many good stories. But it's going to have to wait a while. I think I've got about 6 or 8 months worth of orders :-)
