1/72 Special Hobby Bell P-59A Airacomet "Smokey Stover"

The Bell P-59 Airacomet was the first ever jet aircraft designed and built in the USA.

I have done a few Special Hobby kits, but this was the worst fitting one I have done so far. really bad around intakes and wing roots. So after a lot of filling and sanding and re-scribing we end up with this. Despite the trouble, I am happy with the final result and really like this aircraft, a great edition to my unusual subject display. It was quite a big aircraft in real life 38ft long and 45ft wingspan.

I used Tamiya gloss black acrylic for the base before coating AK Xtreme metals polished aluminium, and then picking out random panels I used other shades of AK and Vallejo metal colors.

I wanted this one nice and shiny like it was new, so as you can see, no weathering, perhaps not realistic, but sometimes I just want to see something shiny!

Good choice in not weathering it.  It looks fantastic!

Looks great!

I have a real interest in the development of both the plane and engine.  I have the kit, but it has not yet made it to my bench.  Fascinating subject!
