Radiator material
Posted by 7474 on Sunday, October 9, 2016 10:46 AM

For my 1/48 Hurricane I want to cut out the plastic for the mesh on the radiator. Are there any alternatives for the mesh material? Like pantyhose?

There are indeed linen screens that can work, as well as fine brass ones, or even photo-etched mesh.  Some hobby shops have the PE mesh, but you will probably have to google the fine pitch brass mesh.  I think Small Parts is one possible vendor.

Hi;

 If you are in a tight spot.( we all get there once in a while ) try this . Go to a yard sale and buy an old coffee maker with the fixed screen coffee filter .You can use the screen from the filter . I have done this when i needed screen finer than I could get at local hobby outlets .  T.B.        P.S. Because it's designed to let liquids through , you can spray it with a wash and the color will work out great .

Certain teas from various coffee chains like Starbucks & The Coffee Bean are bagged in a very fine fabric mesh that can be saved for hobby usage. Also check the crafting areas in places like Hobby Lobby or Michaels for various mesh fabrics used as decorative accents at weddings, on gifts, etc... I have a great supply of multiple differing size mesh due to my scrounging from these places... ultra fine to fine.

I was just going to suggest wedding stuff.

I went to a friends wedding, last year...they had little mesh bags for bird seed (cuz rice is bad now!). I saved a couple of those little bags...nice, fine mesh.

Yes, at the last few weddings that I have gone to, I have snatched up some of the stuff there. (afterwards as the guests are leaving) My wife gives me a funny look then just shakes her head. She knows it's for my strange obsession.

Also visit the plumbing aisle of your local hardware store or home center as many water filters and fittings use a fine metal mesh.  Another place is to visit your local restaraunt as their Bunn coffee makers use a water filter that has a fine mesh screen inside it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Reading this made me think of the big box of paint strainers for automotive body painting that I have in my garage, I think they have mesh. Could this be used? I just want to replace the plastic bit in the radiator. Would I use CA to glue the mesh to the plastic?

Yes, use CA to glue whichever mesh you choose to the plastic.
