1/72 Canadian F/A-18a - COMPLETE
Posted by Marevic on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 1:19 AM

Hi all.

Finally back to the hobby after a fews years break.
I almost exclusively built armour prior to my break but have now been bitten by the aircraft bug.

This is my 3rd attempt at an aircraft build so am keeping it to OOB.

This is Academy's 1/72 F/A-18a.

As I mentioned, this was a straight OOB build.

Unfortunately no in progress pics as I didn't know how this would go.
I've got it to the point where I've pretty much finished the paintwork and weathering.

Pilot figure was donated by a friend from his spares box.
Did a bit of rescribing and cleaning up.

Fuel tanks and weapons done. The weapons just need a wash to pick out the details.
Hoping to have it finished soon.

Thanks for looking!

I love the weathering you've done on those fuel tanks, would like to get a peek at the technique? Panel lines are a touch dark for my taste, but you have a solid looking build in progress there friend. I like it.

Hi Chris.
Fuel tanks were done using the salt method. Darker base, added salt, lighter top coat before removing the salt. Followed that with some heavy weathering using oils (both wash and streaks). Added a final lightly misted top coat of the lighter colour to tone things down.

I also know what you mean about the panel lines. It seems the photos highlight it more than what it looks like to the naked eye.

Quick question for you guys. Need some advice on final clear coat.
Should it be Matte or semi-gloss on modern aircraft?

Very nice build. I would go with a matte finish considering the weathering you have done.

That's some nice work! I've seen some of the USN F/A-18s in person and you've done a great job on capturing the look of them.

Really, really like the weathering you've done here. Really.

Thanks guys.

Gave the kit a shot of Matte. Really dulled things down.
Did some touch ups and added the weapons and tail hook. Just need to finish off the nav lights and maybe touch up some weathering before mounting it on a base.

I like the asymmetric loadout.

Thanks :)

Nav lights done and some final touch ups complete.
I'm calling this one done.

Added bonus of a base like this means I can use it to save on space :)
Although not finished yet, my Crusader will be sharing the space.

Any comments of suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

:) I'll do my best. As I mentioned before, prior to returning to the hobby, I've only really done armour kits before so this was something new for me. It was a great kit to test some new techniques. Still so much to learn....

Great build Jurgen and love the paint finish and weathering.

Grey jets can often be really hard to make look convincing - but you're done a great job on that one. Well done and look forward to more of your builds!

Well done Jurgen, I've seen some of our Hornets up close, and they really do tend to lose any sort of shine. Love it!
