SBD-3 seat belt question
Posted by tomwatkins45 on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 9:06 AM

I'm working on an Accurate Miniatures SBD-3. The Eduard detail set provides lap belts only for the pilot seat. Is this accurate, ie: no shoulder harness for the pilot?

Thanks in advance for the help,

Tom

My understanding is that early war and pre-war Navy planes often had only lap belts and that the shoulder harness was added later. You'll have to pin down the period in time for your plane and determine if that would have had only lap belts. My bet is that Eduard is correct.

Thank You, that's what I suspected. Since I'm doing a VMSB-232 bird on Gaudalcanal in Sept. '42, I'll go with the lap belts only. Thanks again Tom

Yup. I don't know at what point in the war production that shoulder harnesses were added. But the aircraft that we went to war with, Army & Navy (which includes the Marines), had just lap belts, in the opening timespan.

I have the Detail & Scale book on the SBD. It has the info on the seat belts & harnesses. I'll look it up later on and see what it says about timeframes.
