Well done for getting off the mark. I am lucky in that i only hada short break from the hobby. Getting back into it after 5 years was hard enough.

And your right, its all about learning,no matter how long you have been doing it.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I used setting solution on the model before I placed the decals, then used softener. This worked fine on the wings, but not so well on the side of the fuselage. I used the softener before the decal dried. Should I wait until dry? Will use second gloss on the next kit. Thanks for the feedback!

Stick out tongueProper sequence would be:

- gloss coat

- decals

- softener/setting solutions

- gloss again

So for the decals, I did a clear coat, and used a setting solution. I got a Badger decal set from Micro Mark some years ago that includes setting solution, softener, and flat clear coat. So, gloss coat, setting solution, then softener. The decals are 30+ years old, so that may have had something to do with it.

Stick out tongueI admire your re-entering the hobby after all these years.

As as far as the plane, the colors are incorrect...not sure what source you used as a reference but I am fairly familiar with the type and have not seen that scheme...I also see that the decals gave you some trouble...have you ever used setting solution?

But, the important thing is to dive back in and build...a lot...and you'll improve on each build...and learn from others that are willing to give you useful advice...

Keep building and posting pics...

Use every build as a step to the next. I still do almost 40 years later

Thanks for the kind words. I don't want to give the impression I am discouraged...quite the opposite. I am hoping lessons learned will help with continued improvement. I also got the go ahead from the Mrs. to get a Paasche Talon, and received it while working on the Henschel. I was using, and still use a Paasche H. I really like the Talon, and the extra control of a double action airbrush.

On the bench now is a 1/72 scale Matchbox Jagdpanther. At the painting stage now. Fit issues again, but I think the seam work is better. Now if I can find a Dunkelgelb I like....

Looks really good. I don't know the subject well enough to comment on authenticity of details, but it looks to be a solid build. Kudos!

I'm in the middle of my first kit since I was about 13 or 14 as well. It's been an interesting exercise. I sort of wish I had taken a 'practice build' approach, just because it would be a lot less stressful to work out technical issues seperately from aesthetic/philisophical ones. That's especially clear now that I'm a couple/few months into it, but now that I'm this far, I can't really justify going back.

Echoing Chris, what's next?

Cheers

I know just how you feel. I did the same thing last year So I will help divert your focus to the positives. I think your camo came out looking great. Smooth transition between the colors and good uniformity.

what are you thinking of building next?

First model in 30 years...Henschel 129

So this is my first model built since I was a teenager, and the first using an airbrush.  This was a "learning" model, and I was more interested in learning technique than accuracy. This is a model I bought in the 1980's, and was not the best subject for a first shot.  There were multiple fit issues, and I probably would have been better off with a single engine tail dragger.  This is 1/72 scale.

So if you learn from mistakes, I must be a freakin' genius.  A "short" list of errors include: doing no research and painting based on the instructions, so I am sure the color scheme is not accurate.  When seam filling and sanding, I learned you should sand till it looks good, sand some more till it looks perfect, then sand some more.

I tried freehanding the camo scheme without a real idea of what I wanted, and it showed.  So then tried to mask, and found out that curves and bumps are challenging.  Tried a wash to see what it would do, and didn't thin enough, so what I was hoping would be smoke residue looks more like an oil leak.

Then the decals.  Oh God, the decals.  Upper and lower wings went OK, but the band around the back of fuselage set before I could get it square, and you can see the results.  The side decals came as one decal, and I should have cut and set them as three separate decals, but again, learn, learn, learn.

I am still not happy with the bubbles/ridges in the decals, and will try to cut and settle them with some sovent, but not sure this will help.

Went with wheels up since I have nowhere to display, and was planning to hang from my basement ceiling.

Thanks for looking.
