Best P-38 kit out there?

I was wondering when someone would have a bad experience to report, because I've read a lot of negative comments about the kit, over the years, across many forums.  Was the boxing you built a recent one, Fermis, or an older boxing?  The newer pops from the old Monogram molds tend to show signs of the molds' age, compared to boxings from back in the day.  Though, there has been a lot of discussion about Monogram's Lighting even going back to our youth (my vintage is 1964).  The fit of the booms and the cockpit pod was always problematic.  I still like the kit, but I do look for old boxings of it, generally, and the "white box" specifically.

I really couldn't tell ya which particular boxings they were. The first would have been back in the later part of the mid 80's. I did another 3 through the mid-late 90's...all 3 versions. The most recent, and only surviving example, was the glass nose version. I could probably make a great model out of it nowadays...my skills were quite lacking back in the day! Still though, if there was a Hasegawa kit for $20 sitting next to  Revellogram kit for $5 on a vendor table...I'd buy a $25 A-7!!!

Seriously though, I'd go for the Hasegawa...after I talked the vendor down to $15!

That's not saying that the Revellogram is bad, just saying it wasn't as good as the Hasegawa. (Those being the only two brands I have done)

I built the Monogram Pro-Modeler a few years ago. I don't know if that was a repop of someone else's mold but it was a good kit, better than either of the other two I mentioned.

I would like to build the Hasagawa kit but with 3 built P-38s on my shelves, space is at a premium.

 

The ProModeler kit is Hasegawa molds (I think the Eduard boxing is also, but don't quote me on that!). 

The Revellogram is the worst I have done, haven't gotten through the Academy kit yet...I do know enough about it to know that the Hasegawa/ProMod 38 is much more detailed. I don't really recall much in the way of issues with the booms/tail on the Hasegawa kit...maybe a little trimming here and there. I do know that I glued the booms to the wings at the same time, as well as having the tail plane in place...at the time, I recall cursing my mother for having given birth to me with only two hands...a third "helper hand" woulda been nice!

Hobby boss is supposed to have done a 1/48 P-38J/L recently in their easy build line that is a really good kit.

There is a relatively new tool Academy kit in 1/72, and I think in 1/48 as well.  Haven't built either of them but I have been very impressed with the more recent Academy offerings that I have built.

I wondered about that too. I finally got the Eduard 1/48 Pacific Lightnings Limited Edition kit. I really don't know the answer to your query but I'll be dropping by to see what others think about the P-38 kits.

I have built the old Monogram many times. It is a decent kit with decent detail in certain areas, no detail in others such as the wheel wells. I did also recently build the Academy kit which has somewhat better detailing across the board. Both of these kits have similar building rough spots centering around wing-to-boom installation.
