Super Hornet over Iraq?
Posted by Revenant on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 8:08 PM

Anyone know of any colorfully-marked Super Bugs operating in Iraqi airspace between OIF and the withdrawal? Looking for a cool scheme to model...

A little research:

The Super Hornet did participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

2002:

VFA-14 F/A-18E flew close air support. VFA-41 F/A-18F forward air control, VFA-115  F/A-18E flew escort, SEAD, close air support, and Buddy tanker.

2006 and 2007 VFA-103 and VFA-143.

I can confirm these. Likely there are more.  The most brightly painted airplane is the "wing commander's plane", the squadron commander planes have fewer bright markings and more low observable, all other airplanes are full low observable. (Note: nobody knows which airplane they will be flying next until your on deck getting ready to go. What ever airplane is availible is the one you get.)

Chasing the ultimate build.

I do know of 2 schemes for your, not sure if they were in use over Iraq but they are for Rhino's so most likely they saw some action. First is the VFA-14, its out of stock at Sprue Bros. but i know rebelalpha on eBay will has some

http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/ftd48035.htm

Also, check TwoBobs decals for the VFA-41 Rhino, I know he sells both a CAG and lo vis F18-F Black Aces decals both in 48 and 72. Using that sheet on my current build. Come to think of it I know he did VFA-143 decals as well if you're a pukin dogs fan

Indifferent.   Seems like I remember seeing one with a Boar's head on the tail...that was cool but don't know the unit...

Boars head... Hmm i'm guessing that would be VFA-11, the Red Rippers?

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VFA-11#/media/File:F-18Fs_of_VFA-11_in_flight_over_the_Red_Sea_in_2012.jpg

If so, I can't speak to if they were in Iraq, but I THINK TwoBobs also used to sell Red Rippers decals. If not, I do know Furball decals has a hi vis Rhino in one of their sheets!

If you go to rebelalpha on the bay, I can give him two thumbs up for fast ship and condition of what I have got from him. The last purchases were the decals for the surrender Betty.  Never any issues with him.

Plug in   "Scott's Model Workshop"  in your browser, then you can search for what you want.

Victory models also has a bunch of F18 decal sets on the bay.  Just search 1/48 F18 decals.
