Little P-51 side project
Posted by Eagle90 on Saturday, January 14, 2017 11:26 AM

Hey everyone,  Thought I'd post some pics of a little side project I'm doing.  Background: After my wife passed away and I moved myself and my two kids back to Florida, my brother-in-law bought me two 1/72 Airfix kits.  He knows I'm big into modeling and thought it might help take my mind off of everything.  As we stayed with my sister until we found a place to live, we watched a lot of movies together.  Him being a retired Navy Captain and me a retired Air Force Master, we watched a lot of war movies.  LOL!  We watched Red Tails and he loved it.  I told him I met some of them at an airshow once.  So when he bought me the Airfix kits, low and behold, the P-51 was a red tail!  So I thought I'd do it up and put it on a little base for him to put in his office.

The Airfix kit is very nice.  Nice detail on the out side......but I still have to say, I have the utmost respect for you 1/72 gurus!  LOL!  The landing gear was so small, I was afraid it would break.  You guys rock!  So here is my build of a Red Tail P-51.

Thanks Andy.  Like I said, lots of respect for the dedicated 1/72 builders!  The Airfix kit is a really nice one!  I have a Spitfire too.

That's an absolutely awesome job you did on this build.  Especially in the fact that you represented a historic genre!  Great job!

Hi, Eagle -

What a nice job on the -51, a fine tribute to the Red Tail pilots as well. The Captain will surely appreciate it, as he admires it on his desk. (How about a nice F-4 or F-14 for him in Navy markings to accompany it?)

I thank you both for your service, and thanks for the pics of your build.

Hey Patrick.  First, thank you for your support.  The services do appreciate it. Yes

Funny you mention the F-14.  He has said he likes the look of that one too.  I'm sure there will be an F-14 build in the furture.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Thank you very much!  I too think the P-51 is a beautiful airplane.  I checked my stash and I just happen to have a 1/48 and 1/32 P-51.  Can't wait to dive into those now!  LOL!

That looks awesome. I will agree with you the kit is excellent. I did a 357th FG one last year. Loved it. I may have to build a whole squadron

I think you have done a cracking job on that, hard to believe you don't build in this scale often. What did you use for the NMF.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thank you sir!  It is a nice kit.  Just not used to doing 1/72 landing gear!  LOL!  It turned out pretty well.

A whole squadron!  Now that would be very cool!  Yes

You are willingly doing 1/72 scale!?  LOL! Wink  Just kidding.  Like I said, I have a great admiration for those who do mostly 1/72.  A good 1/72 scale plane for me would be a B-52!  Embarrassed  It has been a fun kit and it went together very well.

Thank you Bish!  Very kind of you, but I know you are trying to convert me to the 1/72 side.  LOL!  Wink  You already turned me the dark side with armour.  LOL!

It does seem like I have been doing a few more 1/72 doesn't it?  Huh?

Believe it or not, all I did was spray Tamiya Flat Aluminum (XF-16)!  Very light coats.  Did about 3 coats I think in total.  I practiced on an old plane and it ran very easily, so I backed down and did very light coats, let it dry completely, and did another coat.  Haven't done any of the fancy NMF paint the real modelers use.  Not sure I'm ready yet.  LOL!

WOW Beautiful job Bobby.

The very Mustang I want to build myself in tribute for these brave men.  I can't imagine what these guys went through having to fight in the air and on the ground at home.

I see by your posted medallions that you have been busy with group builds . Sorry for my lack of comments but I don't ever get into the group build area. I'm so glad you have been building out of that huge stash of yours and I'm looking forward o seeing more of your fine work.

Son of a gun! Nice brush work.

We don't see nearly enough of that around here lol. Keep it up, no matter the scale.  :)

Thank you Mike!  The Flat Aluminum I AB'd, but the red was all hand done.  The yellow stripes are actually decals.  ABing the aluminum was a must, but I'm not that good and my AB is not that accurate to have done the red.  Embarrassed  So a couple of light coats and she turned out pretty well.  Thanks again Mike!
