WIP Monogram 1/48 FW-190

If a OOB build is what you're goal is, I say leave it as once everything is pulled together, you won't notice it as bad.  But if your not going to do a OOB build then scratch building/adjustments is a must.  Your idea of styrene sheet sounds like a great idea!  Looking forward to more progress sir!

Just have fun building it and don't look at the bottom when you are done.  If you want good wheel wells find a current kit so you get all the other advances over the last 50 years.  You'll always have a good feeling about that old Monogram kit in your dispaly case.

The gap you are seeing is typical of many of the Monogram kits from that era. I will echo what others are saying in to just st build it strictly OOB and go get a more detailed and up-to-date kit, such as the Tamiya kit.

I love the old kits, personally. But then, I'm the oddball who would scratch build some details into it for my own satisfaction.

I'd go ahead and cover those holes and add a few details just for fun.

Its your build so have fun with it in any way you choose.  :)

Yup, I got them maybe a week ago with some paints, washes and pigments.  Haven't really had much chance to use them, but I can already see how they will help.  Thanks for the info so I could get them.

I think I will see if I can fill in the holes.  Need to learn some scratchbuilding skills at some point.  Even if it doesn't turn out great, at least I should learn something.  I  keep stressing myself out looking at the great work posted on the forum, but I have to keep in mind that I am a newbie, and this is for fun.  If I can at least clean up the seams, get a decent paint job and decent decals, that will be progress for me.  Plus, I have at least 3 more of these old Monograms in my stash to learn the basics from, and these kits cost almost nothing.

Ya gotta love the old school Mongram kits!!  I have a bunch of them myself.

This is not a bad kit except for the open wheel wells and simple cockpit. It's an A-5 version and from my research and some others it is pretty accurate in outline and scale.  I call these kits "shelf scale" kits--they look great on the shelf as long as no one picks it up and looks at the underside.  Kinda like what us RC modelers call "stand-off scale"!

Anyway I agree with the guys and say build it OOB, find another one and send it to Mike B. and let him go nuts on it! BTW I am about as far as you on mine but shelved it for a couple of group builds.

Here is some progress on my glacially slow FW 190.  Lost my bench for about a month while a mason was working on the house.  Learning a lot from this build. 

Decided to try mottling, but have to try it out on a plastic bottle before I attempt it on the actual kit.  Paint scheme is mostly as called out for the kit, but not exactly.  This is an old kit, so I don't know if the color scheme is accurate.  Need to so some painting of parts, and then to the decals.  The Graugrun is Vallejo Model Air, the first time I have tried their acrylic.  So far, I am pretty happy with it.

Nice job!  I use Model Air exclusively and have had no problems mottling. I've found that their retarder is pretty useful in such applications. Good luck!

congratulations on building a great old kit. Yes that is the way the wheel wells are in that kit. Don't let that dishearten you. This is an old kit. just build it and enjoy it and don't stress out about the fact that is not a new molding these kits are for enjoyment of the way the hobby used to be and they can still be built into beautiful replicas.  that's my opinion. enjoy your model

Well, actually, I replied to a six month old post.  Can't believe it took me this long to get to the painting stage.  Hopefully it won't take another six months to get the decals on.    The Mrs. has been binging on Netflix, and I have been taking advantage of the bench time.  Was getting a little frustrated, but am now back in the groove. 

Thanks all for the encouraging posts.  I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for this build.
