WIP Update Completed 1/29/17 Academy 1/72 TBF-1 Avenger
Posted by Toshi on Monday, January 23, 2017 6:09 PM

To my fellow forum members,

This is my next project.  A Christmas present from Mrs. Toshi.  It's not a complicated kit but the canopy masking will be interesting at best.  You can see that at the fourth photo.  As always, I'll provide a detailed build and I want to thank you all as my two year anniversary is coming up in March.  Wow, how time flies.  Anyways, thank you for your support throughout my tenure here!

Big mistake!  My new medication is not working.  It makes my mind foggy.  With TBI, this makes it worst.  I have no recollection of doing this.

Unfortunately, I painted the interior Zinc Chromate Green Gloss.  I can correct this, I'm just really upset with myself.  It's just one of those really bad days for me.  I'll paint over this mess with a flat Zinc Chromate Green or spray this with some clear flat Testors Lacquer in a rattle can.  Sorry about this error on my part forum members, I'll do my best to continue to move forward.

Thank for your words of confidence.  I had suffered a work related accident and have Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI.  There are days that I'm really good or just out of it.  Just like this Avenger build, completely out of it.    LOL!  I'll probably take a day off to recuperate.  What helps me is the utilization of fine motor skills and hand and eye cordination, when I build a kit.

Also my biggest therapy and peace of mind is when I get to meet and write to forum members from all over the world.  Being home bound this helps me greatly.  I so appreciate our conversation, this helps me And I so enjoy it!  Thank you sir for everything!

I look forward to this build as well Bish.  I've never built a 1/72 TBF Avenger before so this should be fun.  I appolagize for my incoherent seizure, Mrs. Toshi was asleep during this trying time.  I should not be building kits, I should be lying down.  But I never listen to Mrs. Toshi, who ever listens to there signifacant other!  LOL!

Bish, thank you so much for your support in my builds I so greatly appreciate that.  What helps me even more is the fact that we have these wonderful conversations that helps me with cognition.  You are a good and loyal fellow forum brother.  Thank you!

Disregard the above thread please.  It's a double.

As for the fix, the enamel Zinc Green Chromate Gloss acted like a primer as I sanded it down a little.  Now I have the correct flat color on.  I also took the time out to mask the turret.

Here is the TBF Avenger fueselauge all buttoned up.  There was no issues nor concerns.  Interestingly, this kit  came with a stand.  As you can see, I will be utilizing the stand.

Nice progress!  I have the 1/48 Hobby Boss Mk I Avenger and I'm finding inspiration in your build to start it!

I think masking an Avenger canopy in 1/72nd might be the end of me.

You did really good there, my friend.

Looking good overall too.

Thank you sir!  LOL!  More than enough panels, especially in 1/72.  I've never done something like that in this scale.  This was tedious at best.  I had to do it twice as the first time did not come out nicely.  Thanks for the visit!

Thank you Bish.  Everything is coming together without any issues.  No seam issues, it went together like a snaptite kit.  From what I've read, this is an older mold by a company called Frog.  Academy used the molds and added recessed panel lines.  There is only one decal marking, it has an arrow symbol.

I'm going to use as a quote from stikpusher; "The arrow symbol was for the Air Group assigned to USS Bunker Hill in late 1944/early 1945. The Yellow cowl ring was added for all Air Groups that participated in the Tokyo carrier raids in Spring 1945, and could be seen as late as the Okinawa operations when the Bunker Hill was knocked out of the war."

You will definately need AM decals for this kit.  If I may be so bold, may I recommend another Avenger kit?  The Trumpeter 1/32 Avenger kit.  I know you don't build in 1/32 but it is one of the most detailed kits I've ever built.  Fantastic fit and finish.  Check out builder2010's Avenger, although a different type of Avenger, it's details are the same.

LOL!  I had to do the canopy masking twice as I messed up the first time.  It was a disaster!  LOL!  Being this was the first time I had to do this many cuts in a canopy in 1/72.  Thank you for the kind words and support!

Thanks for the info Toshi. I know Academy decals have a bad rep anyway so i generally avoid them and have founb some AM ones for Midway. I do build 32nd kits but only German ones, as you will soon see as i have a 32nd He 162 and Ju 87G to build this year.

And i am now at a stage where i am being very selective about what i buy and build, other wise i just end up building stuiff i have no interest in and neglecting the stuff i do. So i will stick with a 72nd on this one, but thanks, and ye, i have been checking that out.

It'll be a while Toshi!  None of the tools I had survived my 20-30 year hiatus from building so I've got a bit of purchasing to do before I can start building again.  Of course those purchases have to fit into my existing Jeep Wrangler modification budget!

Until then I'll be watching and learning from you gentlemen!  Beer

No problem, I understand as I was in the same situation a year and a half ago.  Take your time in picking your tools, you'll want quality products to utilize as they last much longer.  I'm just very glad to have you aboard!

No problem, it's my pleasure!  Yes, Academy's decals are mediocre at best!  I'm glad you bought AM decals, they will conform much better than the stock decals.

I forgot about your passion for all things German in the aircraft genre.  And I do recall 1/32 kits that you mentioned in regards to your stash.

Being selective is a good thing as you only want to build kits that inspire you.  I totally agree about your statement.

Engine_95 won't need to buy a huge number of tools to start with, just basics like hobby knives, sanding sticks and small files, paintbrushes, other basic items. Add other more specialized tools as you need them. That's how my tool kit developed--one saw, one punch set, one whatever found its place on the workbench over time.

Toshi, looking forward to more pictures, as usual!
