Completed Revell 1/48 Spitfie Mk 11
Posted by iampiper13 on Thursday, January 26, 2017 5:17 PM

I'm planning on doing the Bader version of this kit which according to the directions uses the same paints as the Lumsden version. So here goes lol I need some input and searching both here and the web I've actually become more confused with the paints needed. I'm trying to stick to MM Enamels and will be using all brush's. At this time I have sitting in my cart at ScaleHobbist RAF Interior Green and Duck Egg Blue FS35622, on hand I have Dark Green FS34079 and a couple of square bottles of Testors flat brown. Will the ones I have on hand be good for the top camo? If not what are your suggestions? Also I've seen some talk of masks for the camo and now can't seem to find what I was looking for. Thanks in advance!

I would simply draw the pattern lightly with a graphite pencil. I must warn you about the fit of the canopy and windscreen glass.

I think you are going to do a great job on this.  :)

There are mask patterns on my website:

http://www.yolo.net/%7Ejeaton/mymodels/spitfire/templates/SpitTemp.html

The colors you need are RAF interior green for inside, RAF Dark Green and RAF Dark Earth for the top, and Sky for the bottom.

Looking good, Piper. If it's not too late, the seat should be dark red, I believe.

What do you think of the details in that pit? I thought they were quite nice.  :)

I had a few problems with putting the wings on, seems like the IP stuck down too low and I ended up using too much force and managed to break the IP but luckily it's hard to see. Not sure if the wing was already bent or I might have done it taking it off the frame but it had a lot to do with the bad fit. I still have to clean up the putty some more but I went ahead and put a grey paint on it just to soak it in.

I had problems with the IP being too low also. I thought it was something I did.

I ended up sanding a lot of the bottom of the IP off before the lower wings lined up.

I filled the wing root gaps with stretched sprue so I could re-scribe the wing root lines.

Seriously though, watch out for the canopy fit. It's horrible.

LOL it was too late but thanks, I had it painted the green with the rest of the interior but thought that didnt look right so I just took a leap of faith and painted it flat black to go with the head rest and thought that looked worse so it was back to green.

Yes I was impressed with the pit and although its not in y'alls league I felt good with what I did to it, thanks for the comments.

With some of the minor issues you encountered, it seems with the help of FSM Forum members and your skills, you were able to overcome all of these issues without any further problems.

You're doing a justice to this kits.  Everything looks great!  I could have not done better!

Looks great to me! I like the idea of Junior Mints at the bench. That might make me spend more time modelling. Everything you are doing will come in handy when you do the AMT Ju88. Wink

All ready for decals and yes the canopy fit was terrible, got it so if your not real close you can't really tell, oh and that tiny piece of clear plastic that goes behind the antenna umm yeah it's inside the fuselage now ugh lol

Well I hope yours are in better shape than mine were. I had to rebuild the canopy frames and line things up with bits of card stock. That left gaps in the front wind screen which I filled with bits of stretched sprue. After that I masked the front windows and used filler to blend the windscreen into the fuselage.

Never mask the windows and then use liquid cement. It will get under the tape and screw things up badly!

It turned out pretty decent in the end, but the clear pieces were badly molded and none of it lined up anymore. I had the same problems with the Revell Me-109 I did.

So yeah, I hope you take my warning seriously.

This came out pretty good, I enjoyed the build and really appreciate all the help I got! I didn't put the gun mask decals on I did attempt to but my finger tips just couldn't do it. The canopy fit is as has been mentioned atrocious. Once again thanks everyone for your advice and support.
