Hasegawa 1/72 MiG 29 Fulcrum- "Hairy Stick" build #5
Posted by UKguyInUSA on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 2:10 PM

Hello Chaps,

It's been a while since I posted anything, but this is because my wife and I moved to a new home that we bought. With all the packing, moving, unpacking and settling in, time went by fast....6 months to be precise before I touched styrene again. Well, since the move, I still haven't found the time to create my new man-cave/modeling den in the basement, which means that airbrushing is a no go, and so, because I was getting severe withdrawals, I decided to try my hand at brush-painting some 1/72 scale kits in my stash. I chose to do 1/72 rather than my normal 1/32 or 1/48 scale for a good reason- if I screwed up with the "Hairy-Sticks", I wouldn't be too bothered about messing up a smaller and cheaper kit. Since November, I've managed to complete five 1/72 scale kits and one 1/144 scale kit and I have to say, I've had fun painting them the "old fashioned" way, I used Model Master acrylics and then oils for the weathering stage.

So, I'd like to share the fifth model of those 6 builds and apologize for not having/finding the time to post a build log prior to this post. I hope you like it...I was happy with my "Hairy Stick" results:

Although I much prefer to build the larger scale kits, purely for comfort on my aging eyes and much prefer to use an airbrush, I did have fun and this was a decent little kit.

If you'd like to watch my YouTube video for this, then here is the link to that:

Thanks in advance for any comments made, much appreciated!

What is your technique for getting those soft color variations with a brush?

how do you blend so well? It looks airbrushed!

Looks great, good job with brush painting.  Did you spray primer first? The white looks good for Testors Acrylic or is that sprayed?  Was it faster to brush paint vs airbrushing?

I think we should have a seperate catagory for brush painted builds......

Good gravy, if that's what you can do with a paintbrush let's pray that you never get your airbrush setup. Great job! Kyle

I think I'll throw away my air brush!  When are you going to have classes available for your brush technique?

UK,

Having tried brush painting a couple of years ago on a couple of Spads, http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/163274.aspx your model looks good.

I found it IS much easier to paint camo with a brush without all the masking, etc., spraying would require, but I'm still not sure I'd try a modern jet.

You show it certainly can be done.

How did you get the camouflage to look fuzzy? What is your technique? Looks great!

I don't have an airbrush, so though I've used rattle-cans, I live in a second-story apartment and have to set up about halfway across the property, well away from any buildings or cars. For some reason, people don't like it when you accidentally spray-paint thrir cars. Big Smile

Stick out tongue.    Not bad, especially for the Hasegawa kit.

My Dachshund doesn't like it when I pull out the air brush, she runs up stairs!
