Squadron/True Details Stanley Yankee Seat & Tamiya A-1J Skyraider
Posted by harp.ta on Monday, March 6, 2017 10:35 PM

Anyone else have fit issues with the Squadron/True Details seat not fitting into the Tamiya A-1J Skyraider cockpit?  It's a touch too wide and far too long front to back (gets caught up on the joystick.  I feel like I'm doing something wrong but I can't seem to make it work.  Any advice would be appreciated.

On the Bench:

  • Tamiya 1/48 A-1J Skyraider (USAF)
  • Tamiya 1/48 He-219 A-7
  • Tamiya 1/48 P-47M

In the Fridge:

  • Modern Times Brewing Blazing World
  • Lawson's Finest Liquids Sip of Sunshine
  • Half Acre Gone Away IPA

Taking some photos so some folks can see your trouble would help out a lot. Get some calipers and take some measurements. Hope you can get it worked out.

I'm getting ready to start this model here in the next couple of days. Waiting on it to arrive as I type this. I found a Black Box cockpit on the Bay, so I don''t know. Will be checking out your progress as you go.

Good luck in your build!

Are the seats intended just for that kit or are they generic seats.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I gave up and used the rather spartan kit seats.  The cockpits in the Tamiya Skyraider kits is actually pretty good.  The first Skyraider I made (Navy variant), I bought the black box cockpit before the kit arrived and it was kinda unneccesary as the tub and panels were pretty good and since it was the non-ejection type seat that was unneccesary as well.  However, the kit Stanley Yankee seat isn't nearly as good so I went the cheaper route of only getting the True Details seat to go with the pretty good kit tub/panel.

It was way too wide and a little too long for the OOB cockpit tub and in my frustration I tried to force it and scraped some paint off the instrument panels.  At that point I gave up and decided to use the kit seat.  It might be time to buy some calipers...

Anyway, you'll love the kit.  It practically builds iteslf and its a bird that saved a lot of lives.  Plus the loadouts are awesome.  Either load the hershey bar wings with mk 84s or a bunch of rockets and a random drop tank that creates a asymetric load out that is pretty unique looking (also has a pretty cool Vietnam tri-color on a black underbelly paint scheme).  I have an extra TD ejection seat you can have if you end up needing it (or the seat I already painted).

It's the correct scale and seat for the aircraft but its not specifically intended for the kit.  In theory it should fit any aircraft of that scale that had those seats.  As far as I know Tamiya is the only game in town for an A-1J in 48th scale so in theory it should fit but alas, it doesn't.  Kit seats aren't too bad.  Just kinda basic.

Nice job on the pit! Add some belts and some wear to the seat, where the pilot would sit. Add a wash for some depth and drybrush the edges to highlight the edge of the seat cushion.

I was looking at another thread on here yesterdayof a Tamiya 1/32 build. It should be easy to find. Look at the cockpit this guy did. Good example to follow.

It is kinda hard to go back and fix it after gluing the fuselage together. Waiting on the mailman. I may start me a build log and see how that goes. I am still collecting photos for reference before I start.

Keep me in the loop,

That seat is actually post wash - there's nothing to the kit seat so no grooves or nooks for the wash to get into.  I think I'm going to use the pilot and cover it up instead of spending all kinds of time dressing it up (I still haven't figured out how to make seatbelts).  Here is a really good photo of a Stanley Yankee ejection seat I found and used to paint mine if you need it (http://www.ejectionsite.com/safe2002/yankee_2.jpg).

I'm about to start painting the 3-tone camo in a few minutes.  I really love this kit.  A little putty to correct mistakes on panel lines where the etcher jumped the line and marred the surface and a bit on the wing root (you'll find the gap on this kit is almost impossible to get flush without putty) and she's good to go.  I'll post some pics when the camo is all done.

Cheers!

I use cloth surgical tape to make seat belts.  In 1/48 scale it looks like heavy fabric and is self adhesive and takes paint well.
