Moments of Indecision-Is It Time?
Posted by Hodakamax on Friday, March 10, 2017 9:33 AM

I've been hoarding this 1/48 expensive Academy F-4C for awhile. My decades old hand painted Phantom needs to be updated for the Museum. Being one of my favorite aircraft, I really want to do it justice and to yet once again try to produce the perfect model. I've gotten somewhat paranoid on all this after being out of modeling for a couple of years and just completed a A-37 Super Tweet for a practice run. B+, It came out well but as always, not perfect. Well, I realize there will never be a "perfect model" but it is part of the game to set goals. Maybe one more practice run to work on my painting. Is this sounding nutz?

I rummaged around in the stash and found this old Monogram Mig-29. I've already built one for the Museum. They are certainly visual in design and can be painted in striking colors and camos. They do have a lots of surface area to practice painting procedures. I may give it one more shot, so to speak, and try skill tuning one more time.

Actually, I'm just rambling today and trying to find a direction to take and conversing with friends always helps. More practice would be good but then again I could put the Phantom off until I run out of time. My model projects seem to last forever and are influenced by weather. It's hard to keep me inside when it's nice outside. This all reminds  of the song with the line "shall I stay or should I go?"

Well, thanks for listening, looking at my photograph and reading my practice writing today. I still can't decide.Smile

Funny B-1. No indecision on your part, you have a point for sure! LOL!

Just so you know, it's not just you, Max.

I have a small stash, and about half of it is comprised of a handful of kits I bought with about every aftermarket kit I could find for them. That, plus an expensive Tamiya Corsair which should stand on it's own without aftermarket stuff if I don't mess it up too badly Whistling

I keep thinking "get one more kit under my belt first", just as you said.

Stupid perfactionism standing in the way of getting off my rear and doing something yet again.

I find the kits I'm most scared to start (and most of them I haven't) are the ones that have been given as gifts by people I care about. If I buy something and it sucks I'll just put it off or trash it and start over, but I feel like I'd be letting the person down who got me the model if I didn't do it justice.

The difference in build quality between the Academy and the Monogram kits is startiling. I for one, don't like to "practice" on a kit that fights me. I want to practice on something that wants to be built, not one that resists me all the way. Having just completed the Academy kit, I say build that dude. You won't be sorry. It is an amazing kit that will take some time to do, but is worth every blissful minute to complete.

I think BrandonK hit it on the head. Given the way you handled the obstacles you encountered in your A-37 build, and the beautiful end result, you're ready for the kit you want to build. Be sure to post another great WIP!

Well, that was a funny discussion and not many votes for Mig-29 practice, LOL! You Guys actually do influence me, maybe it's time to break out the Phantom. What's scaring me too is that I've seen several incredible examples of this model at shows and it's one that separates the men from the boys. I worry that I can't make the grade on this classic. We'll do the best we can, I'll give it my best W.I.P. shot---Stay tuned and thanks for the advice. I knew I could count on you! LOL! Thanks again everyone!

Max - After seeing the fine job you made of the Tweet, you have nothing to fear of any kit. The Academy F-4 wants to be released from the box it's in, do the right thing and set it free. I'll be watching.

I'm reading this and thinking "I wish I had the patience to build the same model twice in a row".  Seems like I as I finish a model I always feel like I could do better on the second one.  Probably ought to just get a second Phantom to begin with, Max.

Funny John LOL!, one could fly through the second attempt without having to contemplate on what to do next which can be hours or even days in my case! Everything could be done not twice but once with confidence. Mistakes would have already been made.

But wait! I already have the second Mig-29 and one finished. I could practice doing it twice for practice on doing the Phantom twice!

Hmm, I think everyone's right, it's time to start the Phantom.

Here's an alternate plan I'm considering. The Mig is easy and could be quickly assembled to painting stage while also starting the Phantom. All painting procedures could be tried just before finals on the Phantom.

Well, here I am procrastinating again, it's probably time to act. This is not the time of year that I seriously build models. The cold parts of Winter and the hot parts of Summer are model buiding time at least in earnest. I'm just warning everyone that I build at a snails pace. I get there, it just takes a long time! LOL!

Check out these potential "practice Migs". These could really test painting skills during Phantom assembly!

OK, I'm rambling again, but part of the fun of the last W.I.P. was writing and photography and everyone's comments. Let the project begin!

The Phantom builds up sweet OOB, but it needs belts. That is all.

Well, I did drag out the Mig-29 to maybe co-build it with the Phantom and try some painting ideas. You have to build the cockpit first to get all the body parts together for painting. I would like for the Mig to look better than the first one. Way too boring I discovered almost immediately, I'm too restless to be piddling with this cheap Mig when there's a cool Phantom to build! You guys were right again, bad idea on my part. Later, much later, on the Mig-29. I can practice painting with plastic bottles. It'll still be a slow project but I'm heading the right direction. Hopefully W.I.P. Phantom posts soon!

Thanks Gang!
