I did a lot of extra detailing of cockpit (seat pack parachute, belts and harness) because I like to depict model with canopy open.  Modern kits have such neat cockpit detail, even in 1:72!  Hate to cover it up.

Actually, I have finished up with the Aclad.  Just a few more little details to add and I will be done!!  Pics soon.

great to hear you are building the p59. I built that kit in Tex Hills markings, with alclad. Like you said, sparse cockpit, but once you close it up, you really can't see much.

Thought I would post this link. Yeah, Planes of Fame out in California will have a flying example of Bell's P-59!

Wow, thanks!  That is a great picture!  I have added it to the project build file on my computer.  I would love to see a P-59 fly.  I saw a P-80 fly first in 1945, and saw lots after that, but never saw a P-59.

I know the P-59 didn't perform as well as expected, but I always thought it was a great looking bird. I'm looking forward to seeing yours progress.

Well, my work on both the P-59 and the P-80 have come to a crashing halt!  I find myself unable to work with Alclad!  I have used Alclad for years, have won awards for models done in Alclad.  I have clogged up both of my Airbrushes with it. I can get them cleaned up okay, but then when I try again, after about 30 seconds they clog again- I cannot seem to get a decent finish.  I am not giving up, but both models are on hold until I figure out what is going on.  In the meantime, I am sharing my travails in the Painting and Airbrushing forum.

I'm also working on one of these, using a resin interior, Black Box, I think.  I am making a vac canopy so I can do the first XP-59A.

Don, this looks like a cool build. Where can this kit be found?

I did buy the Monogram F-80 today. I'll be building it as a FL ANG F-80 I think, or as an AAC P-80. Not sure yet.

I've had this kit in my stash for seven or eight years, so no idea of where to get it now- got it from Squadron originally.

I am also building an F-80 (see other thread).  I started it before the P-59, but it has taken a long time getting putty into the glaring gaps and ornery offsets!  The Czech Models kit is the opposite of the Hobbycraft P-59 kit.  The detail is beautiful but the fit is attrocious!  I figure I used a milligram or two of putty on the P-59, many grams worth on the F-80!

I have one in the box, the OD one. I bought a True Detail cockpit set which fit very nicely.  Issues I thought needed addressing were the intake splitters with through mounting holes, lack of sheet metal (styrene) under the outboard sections of the wings where the ailerons are, and those dreaded vinyl tires.  And nose weight, of course.  I mixed Milliput with lead birdshot and packed both sides of the nose wheel well.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your model build up!

wonder if it's the same kit i've been messing with don. i have no clue how to post pictures, but i'll do best to describe it.

hobby craft kit # hc1439 p-59a"1st us jet fighter"  box cover showing it in silver,  88 on the nose, and the background is a snowey mountain. the box bottom(box opens on the ends) shows us army alaska 1944 and us navy natc pax river 1947.

i'm attempting to build the natc and have completley blemishid the canopy sections beyond repair (i prefer not to describe how that happened....) do you know where i can find a vacuformed replacement? tanker builder said i can redo it, but it's badddd...

Yep, that is the one.  The detail, especially in the cockpit is a little sparse, but I love the excellent fit.  Going to do an Alclad finish.

Try Use.com - No fees. You can upload with the phone app or from the web page.  Pretty simple to "Use" lol.

Under the uploaded images is a link to generate img codes (opens a new page). Scroll all the way down and choose the last one. Click it to instantly copy then paste it into the text box here. Done.

There will be two lines of code for each image. The second one is just a link (Click here to enlarge) and you can delete that because clicking on the image also does that function. Then if you're up to it erase the [CENTER] from the beginning of the code in the first line.

Not necessary, but keeps the post a little cleaner. You can just copy/paste and you'll be perfectly fine.

I hope that helps you. :)

Been working on a second early jet, for a club challenge.  This hobby boss kit has super fit, minimal putty needed, so it has caught up to my P-80 (still filling and finishing, trying to get that perfect gloss undercoat for Alclad).  With photobucket now unusable, I am trying Google Photo.  Let's see if I can post a photo!
