P-82 Build Log...

Yeah, if someone out there would make a good 1/48 scale P-82 that would be great. With options for Merlin power as well as Allison power. The two prototypes and the next 20 P-82s had Merlin engines! The Allison powered P(F)-82s were slower and had a lower operating ceiling. I think Rolls Royce wanted a $6000 per engine licensing fee so NAA switched to the Allison very early in P-82 production. The prototype that is being restored at Reilly's shop in Douglas, GA has Merlin power. One Merlin turns left, the other turns right. So if you are building the Monogram kit be sure that the propellers both turn in and not out! The right engine turns left, the left engine turns right.

Now, to your subject--I think I've missed this, but is this the old Monogram 1/72 kit, or the newer 1/48 kit (whose maker's name escapes me)?  I love the NMF on this bird, that's a cool look!

 

 

 

 

Was gonna ask if it was the Mono kit....but based on the lines, I'd say yes(???)...I do know of a couple other offerings in 72....the 48th kit is from ModelCraft, and I can assure you that it is one craptastic kit! If you ever get ahold of one, you'll have to work for it, and it'll make you utter and/or scream some words you didn't even know you knew! But...if you beat it...everything else afterwards will be gravy!

Actually, I think it was his companion Romana!  I was a pretty impressionably boy at the time.  I thought the original Romana was hot, but then the second one I thought was even hotter!   LOL

I'm thinking I'll finish the LT-6. Those airplanes were used as FAC in Korea and they showed a lot of wear and tear. A good candidate for weathering...

Two builds done... you are moving right along.  Is the texan, p-51 or p-40 next?  The p-40 or the p-51 would make good kits to try a wash since they both have recessed panel lines.  See you sat at the build day.

This bird looks great!  Love the paint job and the whole what-if scenario.  And as a life-long "Whovian" I really love the Matt Smith reference.    (Although Tom Baker was, and always will be, my favorite Doctor.)

Ready for its close-up! The P-82 is finished...finally. It's the second airplane I've finished since I returned to the hobby. This is a "what if" build. If WWII had lasted through 1946 and into 1947, I'm sure the P-82 would have been deployed to the Pacific to escort B-29s to and from the Japanese home islands. This model depicts a P-82 of the 462 Fighter Squadron, 506 Fighter Group, on Iwo Jima, late 1945, early 1946. Since this build is a "what if" I took some liberties: The aircraft number 628 is my birthday. The tail number, 6750, indicates a P-82 built in 1946, the year I was born. The airplane's name "Geronimo" is an homage to Matt Smith as The Eleventh Doctor. Comments welcome...

I had similar issues early on using acrylics until I began using a retarder.  I got some Tamiya retarder and experimented using it with all brands of acrylics and have had great results. I get no clogs, even when spraying with my .18 needle in my illustrator style airbrush similar to a Iwata Micron. I can spray acrylics at very low and high PSI with no spatter or mid air drying.  

I have not tried the retarder with Testors but it may work the same.  A bottle of retarter is $3-4 bucks and you use a 1 to 10 ratio so the bottle goes a long way.

The only issue I had with the Testors acrylic was that I had to dab the nozzle with lacquer thinner on a Q-tip occasionally to keep the paint flowing. The pressure was set to about 20lbs. Now I need to get some 1/72 scale national insignia. After I do the decals and put on the propellers, I'll shoot it with some Dullcote then put the canopies on, then it goes on tehe shelf...yay!!

Looking good Frank.  Glad to see your back at it.  I would love to see this up close at next Mondays meet.  What was your experience with Testors acrylic?  I found them problematic but that was years ago and have not tried them since.

Yeah, this is the Monogran 1/72 scale kit. I don't ordinarily work in 1/72 scale but I wanted to do a twin Mustang. The finished build will be a "what if" build, a fighter that was never deployed because the war ended, kind of like the P-80 Shooting Star that didn't really get deployed. I have another F-82 kit in the stash that I might do the same with later.

I have more build pictures to post but I'll be out of commision for the next couple of days. I stuck my thumb in my eye and scratched the cornea so I can't see to work on the airplane. After I finish this post my left eye will get drops and be dilated and my depth perception will be off. So, more to come after Monday.

Looking good so far keep at it.  As for dust and or lint or anything else that can get stirred up when you spray paint there is an easy solution, and inexpensive.

Use an appropriate sized cardboard box and paint the inside. The paint seals dust, lint, and other stuff so it does not get airborn when you spray. Before each spray job wipe the "paint booth" with a damp cloth. Also clean the area around the "paint booth so that the chance of stirring up lint, dust, etc. is minimized.

We tend to be our own worst critics, but keep this in mind, "if/when you build the PERFECT model it is time to quit. Until then keep on building them and enjoy the hobby.

This started happening to me after the last forum upgrade.

Over at Hyperscale, with it's older software, I have to strip off the image tags as well, or the page will show the linked image, but with '[ IMG ]' in front of it and '[ / IMG ]' after it.

Not in bold but actually linked to the image...

This second post is because copy entered in the post above keeps being linked to the images and I don't know how to prevent that from happening.

As for the linking issue... I get the same thing, but I found that if I put a period after the link for the picture, then hit return, the period will be linked but then the text after it will be fine.  So you just end up with a little blue-linked period under the picture.

I stripped out everything from the first URL tag, '[ URL ]' up to the first image tag, '[ IMG ]', and then the closing URL tag, '[ / URL ]'.

The forum's software apparently doesn't handle the URL tag correctly.
