Hello!

Where did you dig this one out? It's rare even in Poland! I can't recall seeing one in modelling shops and I have visited them weekly or more often back in the nineties!

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

I was only thinking that you don't see too many Spitfire kits with those markings included.  :)

Hello Bish!

ZTS Plastyk Pruszków was a company that was making plastic models in Poland since, like the seventies. In socialist Poland those were the only plastic models you were going to get with some luck. If you were insanely lucky you might get some soviet models (Novo). If you had some family abroad and a boxload of money (like your whole months pay) you might get yourself a Matchbox or a Monogram. If not you were stuck with ZTS Plastyk kits. They have made mainly 1:72 aircraft, some Polish pre-war designs like the PZL-37 Los, RWD-5 sports aircraft or the LWS Czapla observation aircraft. There were some Soviet machines, like the Il-2 Stormovik or the Jak-1 fighter. After 1990 they started re-packaging some suspicious sprues, going down with the quality. I don't know if they still operate today.

Have a nice day

The basis of the kit appears to be a MK IXe/XVIe with clipped wings and additional parts to make any Mk IX/XVI and possibly a Mk VIII. However, MH712 was a Mk IXc not a clipped wing MK IXe. In fact, the only 'e' wing Spitfires that 302 Squadron were equipped with were Mk XVIes from January 1945.

So to make MH712 you will need to attach new wing tips. It can be difficult to get a result that looks good. As the Irish are fond of saying “If that's where you are going, I wouldn't start from here”. It may be better to build the kit as a clipped Mk IXe or XVIe and look for a 'proper' Mk IXc kit. You will need one with a pointy rudder rather than the usual rounded type.

MH717 was a LF.IXc flown by W/O Henryk Dygała.

Seen here fitted carrying two 250 lbs on wing racks and a 500 lb bomb under the fuselage. The disc civers on the wheels are typical. The black and whites bands under the fuselage are in a slightly different position than those seen on other aircraft. Note the usual rounded type rudder has been replaced with a pointed type which is darker in colour.

Here it is carrying a 45 gal drop tank. Note that there are no stripes under wings.

The square on the roundel is a fabric patch covering the inlet socket for old IFF aerial wire. In the middle of the letter W is the the admonishment 'WYCIERAĆ OBUWIE' (wipe your feet) also found on some of the other 302 aircraft.
