Revell-Monogram P-51D Big Beautiful Doll-Any Good?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 24, 2003 10:12 AM
Hi to all - Does anyone know if the 1/48th scale revell P-51D Mustang "Big beautiful doll" is a good kit. IT's the one with the checker board nose. I just bought it, however, I have since found out that it may have gotten poor reviews due to fir problems. However, I don;t know if that was earlier kits. Anyone with any comments. suggestions or experience with this kit would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all,
Paul

Hey Paul,

In it's day (1970's) it was a good kit. It still has a good bit of detail (the cockpit is VERY well done), but it's rather long in the tooth. And the fit is rather poor in spots. The Hasegawa and Tamiya kits are much more detailed and also much better fitting. They are, however, more expensive.

The Revellogram kit is a decent value. If you're not a hardcore builder, then it should be no big deal. But if you really want an easier build and excellent detail, I'd go with the Hasegawa or Tamiya offerings. The Tamiya kit fits like a dream, but the Hasegawa kit is my personal choice for total builder-friendliness. Tongue [:P]

Hey Paul,

I just finished this kit. It is the second aircraft I have built. The fit was not that bad, but it has the raised panel lines. I had to fill some seams around the fuelsalage & the checker decal was a bit tough around the nose. Overall it is good kit for the money & I am pleased with outcome. Weathering and dullcote really helped the overall appearance.
