Lancasters Today
Posted by jimz66 on Saturday, March 27, 2004 6:38 PM
What remains for Lancs in todays world? Are any still flying? What shape are they in? Are there any Stateside? I would love to get some references to them. I have the older Tamiya kit from the 1970's I think. It is sitting on the shelf calling out my name, but I am not ready for that monster yet.

Hey Jimz66,

I have had an interest in that Tamiya Lanc', and just recently saw one at my local hobby shop, yeah they wanted $119.00 for it! Just thought it might make you feel better about having it already!

I knew of two surviving lancasters, the one in England (BoB flight) and one with the CWH (Canadian Warplane Heritage). Seem to remember an article about a Genesco NY airshow some years back....

$119 bucks !! Boy, am I glad I also got one of the original issues, too. Nice kit, no problems building, and very impressive when done. I agree with Nicodemus, there are only 2 in flying condition. The Canadian Warplane Heritage museum, and the Old Flying Machine Co. in Duxford England. The "Discovery Wings" channel has had shows on boyh of them.

Are there any on static display at least? I know that only one or two B-29's survive in flying shape but there are plenty of them around at museums.

here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada they have one in the areo space museum, doesn't work, they are currently restoring it.

South of here in Nanton, they have a Lancaster museum, they have a very nice lancaster, i'm pretty sure it is a working one too.Big Smile [:D]

Also; airfix makes 2 1/72 lancasters, one normal one, and the other is the "dam busters" one.

There are only 2 flying but many examples are in museums in the UK.
Also when I visited the RAAF museum at Bull Creek in WA 23 years ago there was one there as well.
I would imagine that any country that contributed Squadrons to Bomber Command would have Lancs in museums.
It would be nice to see another one in the air - just in case!

There is a reciently refurbished Lancaster on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra ACT.
It is G-George the subject of the ORIGINAL Airfix kit. she is in great condition and is displayed with a ME109,163 and 262 as well a Mossie, Wirraway and several other important aircraft.

There was an article in "Flypast" magazine just recently on Lanc survivors, but can I find it now????????? Banged Head [banghead] As best I can remember, there are several in Canada, of which one is airworthy, a couple in France, at least one fully restored in Australia, and a number in the UK, which include:
the BBMF airworthy example,
one at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (restored)
one at the RAF museum Hendon (restored)
a nose section at the Imperial War Museum London
one at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (taxiing condition - you can go for rides in it!!!!!. They also have a Hampden there under restoration)
There are other examples in the UK too but I couldn't remember them off the top of my head.
There are also a number of related aircraft which survive, including a couple of Yorks, a Lincoln, and a number of Shackletons

In the queue: 1/48 Beech Staggerwing (RAAF), P38 (RAAF), Vultee Vengeance (RAAF), Spitfire Vb (Malta), Spitfire VIII x2 (RAAF), P39 x2 (RAAF), Martin Baltimore (Malta?), Martin Maryland (Malta), Typhoon NF1b, Hellcat x2 (FAA)

When I was still in the AF, my assistant CC went to England with the jet in support of a airshow there. He gets back and I'm asking him about the show and he's telling me about all the jets, and I said, what about the WWII stuff? Oh yea- there was alot of that there too, and he proceeds to tell me about "this big, black, 4 engine job, that kept buzzing the field. I called him a dumass and told him what he saw!

Wow 119.00 for a Taimya lancastor. I paid 65.00 for mine in 1996. Havent built it yet I was waiting till the skills got better then natrually I have no room to build it now. But for an old kit it sure is a beut.
