Thanks Goldhammer.

Thanks GlennH.

Thanks Seasick: This is my forth B-52, built my first one around 2001 during my early years in modeling.

Thanks Lodni Kranazon.

Paint touch-ups continue, using the trace paper as a mask has really cut down the time when airbrushing. I had planned to paint over the cockpit canopy, because I some show broke it into to then glued it back together. I have another canopy from my first B-52 that I salvage.  The wheels and landing gear doors are dry fitted on.  This model is becoming a paint hog. Wink

Dan your BUFF is looking snazzy!

[Admiring Starbuck's space fighter] Cassiopeia: It's a perfect machine! Born to dance amongst the stars! Starbuck: Yeah, it's bumping into them that has me worried.

Beautiful work and a heck of a bench setup.

A number Army Viet Nam scans from hundreds yet to be done:

Dan, nice job on the rescue of an old kit.  Have the "G" from AMT in the stash to build one day, worked on those at Beale back in the day.

Stik-  like the pic of the MJ-1, had those assigned to us along with the -4's when working F-4's in the ECM shop.  Wisconson air cooled V-4, 3 speed manuals.  Loved driving them.

Big SmileHey stick, do you remember Columbus GA, not that I do (this is an inside joke - pun intended).

No clear memories at all... aside from graduation day afternoon with my folks there. And even less of Phenix City, AL... and I’m taking the 5th on the rest ranger Wink

More BUFFs Dan? That is sweet! If it’s not too late, I would suggest yellow zinc chromate for the flap wells, and not the green ZC.

I plan to get another AMT 1/72 B-52H or G Stratofortress, was building one about eight years ago but never finished it. The only glue I was using at the time was testors cement, wish doesn't work well on painted parts. Discovered CA glue a year or so later.

Thanks guys, I airbrushed on Tamiya X-1 Black on the sides and bottom, it took two coats and about ¾ of the 10ml tamiya bottle was used up. After that I applied Model Master Enamel Green Zinc Chrmate on the bottom where the flaps go in, and Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black on the nose and chin to give a weathered look.

Here and there I see little cracks and gaps. Embarrassed

That looks great! Far better than the one I built 40 some odd years ago and painted with Testors square bottle paints and a brush...

Ditto

Big SmileHey stick, do you remember Columbus GA, not that I do (this is an inside joke - pun intended). There is a B-52 D on display in Ypisslanti MI at the Willow Run Airport (built by Henry Ford for the building of B-24 Bombers). I believe it is a SEA participant. It is Camo topside, and black on the underside.

Thats's one Huuuuge model, glad you're posting the painting. I'd like to build one but I don't know what I would do with it if finished - I'll just enjoy seeing how yours comes together.

I hear you. Definitely not a model for a small one-bedroom apartment like mine.

Ditto LOL But I am lucky in the sense that the model I painted & hung up about 40 years ago my Sister, thankfully, took it down while I was in the Corps and put it into storage with a few other kits of mine! So I have (most of) that kit taken apart and in a box. Since many of the landing gear struts (and doors) got knocked off and disappeared years ago I plan on restoring it to an in-flight model. Stick out tongue I will be following this with interest!

Mine did not last until adulthood and enlistment... although it was hanging in my room for many years until its' fate... it became a BB gun target a few years before the date I left home to move in with Uncle Sam down in Georgia...

and yes, this is a good project to follow...

Thanks guys for the kind words, it feels really good re-starting this model. When Monogram re-released the RB-36 around 2009 I picked it up, I never finished it.  The wingspan is 2' 5", and the length is 2' 2".

Today I finished the third color, Model Master Enamel SAC Bomber Tan #1792. Applied two light coats, now on the top from heavy sanding the panel lines were removed so I just covered the areas in a wide pattern. Next up will be Tamiya X-1 Black.

What fun! Mine's been hanging from the ceiling for several years and started camo. These are classic kits along with the B-36 if you call yourself an aircraft modeler, lol. They are large even at 1/72. I'm enjoying your restoration and all is looking good!

Gorgeous work so far! I'd love nothing more than for Monogram to reissue this monster of a kit. This, and their B-36. I can't wait to see your finished product! Eric

Revell 1/72 B-52D Stratofortress (work in progress)
Posted by DantheMan85 on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 5:33 PM

Hello there, I decided to start up my Revell 1/72 B-52D Stratofortress after about eight years of the model hanging in my basement 80% finished. First things I did was to locate any seams for cracks, then filled and sanded. The canopy is cracked down the middle and I don't have any spares so I'll be painting over them with a silver paint to look like shades have been placed in the windows.

I had used Model Master Enamel spray Gloss Black #1947 on the bottom and sides, to smooth out the transition between the gloss black and the unpainted I sanded them down with 400 grit sand paper. After that I used 800 grit to sand and smooth all the surfaces.

To make painting easier I screwed some full looped hooks to a 1”x4” board to act as a handle for painting. I bent the right side hook to slip the landing gear leg in and out.

After looking at photo's and see the B-52D at the Air Force Museum, I began to attach antennas on. Some are from a Academy 1/72 F-15C, two from a Dragon 1/48 Ju88 that I cut in half to make four, and cut some 0.020 styrene to shape.

For a prime base I was going to use up my Tamiya TS-48 Gunship Grey but only had enough for the top surfaces. After that I pre-shaded with Tamiya X-1 Black, in the areas for the SEA paint scheme. Then I filled in some areas with a black sharpie marker.

13 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

The paint scheme I'm going with is the South East Asia scheme, the colors I'm using are, Model Master Enamel Dark Green #1710, SAC Bomber Green #1793, SAC Bomber Tan #1792, and Tamiya X-1 Black. About eight years ago when I started this model, Testors made the two SAC Bomber colors in there ½ oz. Bottles, today there only made in spray cans.

23 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

To make paint easier I drew the camouflage layout on the surfaces, then traced them on to trace paper and cut the shapes out. I numbered them to make it easier to line them up in the right spots. I used masking tape rolled up to hold the trace paper masks down.

14 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

First color up is Dark Green #1710, three light coats were applied. These masks make it so much easier than free handing with over spray.

15 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

(This is by far the largest model I've airbrushed)

16 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

As a comparison I put my Academy 1/72 F-15C Eagle to next to the Stratofortress.

17 by Daniel Smith, on Flickr

Next color up is SAC Bomber Green #1793, while prepping for the SAC Green color I knocked off one of the engines, I'll re-attach it while the Bomber Green is curing.
