Mike,

Absolutely amazing job on everything. I really like how well you blended the paint into the canopy. Perfect!!

It does have the general shape of a P-40. But you haven't seen the landing gear area. The gear knuckles are oversized and nothing back from them is in the same scale lol!

I didn't bother trying make it accurate lol.

There are stI'll a lot of old kits out there like this one. Just better build it the best you can and enjoy it lol.

But as I stated before, at least the decals are accurate, even if a touch off register.

The 1/48 Monogram markings are just a mish-mash of the three squadrons all in one. More of a tribute than any particular aircraft that the AVG had.

thanks for the compliments on this build. It does look neat with the markings on it And I am a sucker for Sharks mouths painted on P-40's lol!

Canopy-wise and windscreen-wise, I can see what you mean. The rest of the model looks pretty accurate in the pictures, though.

Regardless, you did a great job on it!

Lol. No the old 1/48 Monogram kit was shape accurate. This little kit doesn't even accurately represent the shape of the P-40.

Here's where it's at right now. I've got a good flat coat on it and I removed the window masks. I have to do some touch ups because I did rush the masking process and it's a touch sloppy, but it's nothing I can't do with a little paint and some patience.

The kit is actually quite aweful, having misaligned parts that are not always in scale. The kit glass is too small and required me to add styrene shims which makes it look like the canopy came from a Hurricane. It's only saving grace is that the decals are accurate for Charles Olders plane.

Heh heh... Sounds like they copied and down-scaled the old 1/48th Monogram molds.

Great job on it, though. Looks very nice!

Thanks, Dwayne. :)

I use the Vallejo flow improver. It does help but if I use too much the paint acts funny. Almost like it stays wet like gloss enamel does lol.

Bish

Thats come out really well for a simple build and paint. Thats a nice scheme and the shark mouth really adds to it.

Ditto  Nice job on the camo.  Compressor upgrade, eh?  Nice.  I'm sure you have read this on the forum already(that is where l learned about it), but I use Vallejo Flow Improver with Tamiya acrylics, and it cuts down on tip dry pretty dramatically.

Looking forward to your future projects,

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

Looks great Mike!

I've heard the term "registration" used in reference to the decals, what does that mean?

it refers to the colors lining up correctly. When you have decals such as roundels with the white underlayer showing around an edge then it's out of register. It's a printing term from when you had to take such things to a print shop and there were no desktop printers for home usage lol.

Thanks, Brandon! :)

if I run across this kit again I'm going to pick it up just for the decals lol. They are pretty good. Only a slight registration problem, but easily fixed.

I didn't do anything fancy with the kit. It's not one I would invest a lot of time into. The paint is without modulation or any other tricks. I just used it as a paint test.

The new Airfix is superior in every way. But for a simple build and paint it served its purpose well.

That's my favorite P-40 scheme #68. I love how this one looks, you did a splendid job on this one.

I've been playing with this build here and there, mostly to try out my new compressor. The upgraded compressor has made spraying a lot easier but new problems have developed that I didn't have to worry about before, such as tip dry. But I'm working out the bugs as I go because I've read more than a few forum posts that have given the solutions. So I'm doing pretty good lol.

The kit is actually quite aweful, having misaligned parts that are not always in scale. The kit glass is too small and required me to add styrene shims which makes it look like the canopy came from a Hurricane. It's only saving grace is that the decals are accurate for Charles Olders plane.

I decided to build it wheels up and there is still some detailing to do before I call it complete. But I am at a point in which I think I can share this little crap bird.

Colors are Vallejo - U.S. Dark Green, Game Air Earth, Vallejo Sky Grey, and Tamiya NATO Black. Aside from touching up the sharks mouth decals I've primarily used just those colors.

I've been wanting to build this kit for a long time. I knew it wasn't a great kit, but it's an AVG P-40. I must build it lol. Besides, it did make for some good airbrush practice!
