Got this one wrapped up.

In addition to all the final pieces, after a dark wash, I sprayed over the OD and markings with clear flat, and added a little bit of very dark grey to the clear and sprayed the exhaust stains.

In addition to Trumpeters typical inaccuracies, another bugger about this kit...all the control surfaces are separate. That is nice, but they all need to be modified, in order for them to be attached in any way other than in neutral position. I don't see any single "issue" as a deal breaker, but when there's accuracy and engineering issues from start to finish...even down to the decals (there were some that said "P-47" on em...???!!!)...I would not recommend this kit be bought at retail price!!! 1/2 price on a vendor table...maybe!

It's hard to imagine how Trumpeter and Dragon both missed the mark on the Mustangs.  There's one at almost every airport and the original drawings are easily available.  I'm real glad Tamiya has stepped up, and if you look for discounts they are reasonable especially considering what you get.  But then like a farmer friend said, "You want what I got or what I don't got?"  Seems to fit Jeremy's situation here.

 

Trumpeter seems to miss the mark on everything...truth be told. From shape inaccuracies, medeocre moldings, inaccurate markings...some are over detailed(things you'll never see), or partially detailed, but leaving out key items...like in this case, you get an engine, but there's no framework that should be there when the panels are removed. Then, there's those rubber tires...I absolutely can not stand those things. I think the guys that design their kits just say "Ahhhh...crose enough". I am not a fan of Trumpeter.

Anyway...moving along...

I’ve got a D in 1/32, molded in clear plastic. Drops bombs and stuff...

Ready to paint!

Started with an over all "Magnesium" (MM Metalizer). This is a fairly dark shade, compared to "Aluminum", and act, somewhat, like a pre-shade.

I sprayed "highlights" between the rivet lines with various shades (steel, aluminum, and aluminum plate), with a final very light coat overall, to tone down the darker magnesium.

You can see the difference on the inner wing panels (which will be OD)

Next will be a gloss lacquer, so I can mask (safely!) and paint the other colors.

Nice work Fermis, looking forward to seeing what you use for NMF. 

I've been meaning to try the new AK Extreme Metal coming up on my 1/32 F-15E BB.

I love 1/32 scale.

Beautiful scratch-building there. I have a couple of Trumpeter 1/32 kits ( P-40 and P-38 )and I hope I don't find them to be as inaccurate.

 

Not sure about the 38....the 40 was my first build when I started building again (also my 1st WIP here). Probably my favorite Trumpy build too (in 1/32 at least). It does have some accuracy issues (I think they all do), but nothing that is grossly outta whack. Makes for a good looking model!

I’ve never bought a Trumpeter kit but from a lot of what I’ve read they sure are pricy for what you get.

 I do believe they are over-rated and overpriced...but they're still a little cheaper than some of the other options (which are going to be better!). However, they are the only option for a fair amount of subjects. That said, I have never paid retail price for any of their kits. I have a good 8-10 of their 1/32 kits that were with a LARGE stash acquisition, and the couple that I've built were deals from vendor tables. They were worth it, after the discounts!

This is going to be OOB, other than a little extra work around the engine details and pit...no aftermarket.

 

I am still not a fan of Trumpeter...weird mold seams, enough detail for a "start" but they seam to stop short...and accuracy issues all over the place. Regardless...it'll look like a P-51D when it's done!
