Excellent response from John, not much I can add.

From the start of the war and for the most part the Battle of Britain period, there were constant changes to regulation sizes and styles of roundels.  There was even a period from early June till mid August 1940 were no roundels were carried on the undersides.

Keep in mind that the Spitfire's elliptical wing allowed it to carry a larger roundel than the Hurricane.  Also, never was this marking allowed to extend over the control surfaces, as it was deemed to effect aileron balance.

regards,

Jack

Not that simple, it varied with the time during the war and the squadron.  I resort to studing photos.  Colors vary also, gray and sky for the most part but red for night.  Not for codes so much, but here are some useful British Hurricane and Spitfire charts, and a general one.

 And for the Hurricane, simpler:

And then this chart:

Looking For The Proper Decal Size For 1/48th Scale Hurricane and Spitfire

While Looking for a sheet of RAF squadron code letters and numerals, I noticed that are different sizes within the 1.48th scale realm.  6,8, 10, inch and 24 and 30 inch.  Could someone please tell me what is proper for a Spit and a Hurricane?  Thanks.
