Ohmygooness ! !

Darren , that plane sure brings back my interest in odd planes . I always thought it looked somewhat like a spaceship ! Weird . Great job on the model though ! T.B.

Thanks all. It is indeed the Hobbycraft kit. This will be headed out to VFA-86 Sidewinders as part of their history build for their squadron space. I didn't find the Hobbycraft kit to be all that bad, though I've heard others have struggled with it. The nose is off, but it doesn't really bug me all that much.

Darren, nice rendition of one of the oddest looking US carrier aircraft ever in production.

I suspect the high angle of attack was required since the aircraft couldn't really use flaps, a common issue in tailless designs.

I've had a Fujimi brand 1/72 scale F7U-3 in my stash for a couple of years now.  It too is a very basic kit but it has very nice engraved panel lines and molded exterior detail reminicent of a Hasegawa style. I bought it at the IPMS Modelpalooza in Orlando

Really nice job on the Cutlass Darren! One of my first models in the '50s and I did get to see a real one a few years ago at the Naval Air Museum. Excellent rendition! That would look great in my museum, LOL!

I went and looked up the nicknames for the F7U. A nickname is usually telling:

  • The Gutless Cutlass
  • The Ensign Eater

The airplane handled badly at low speed, considered underpowered, and had a high accident rate. Still holds the record for highest accident rate for the USN/USMC in jet fighter, even after the efforts of the F-8, and AV-8A/B to unseat it.

I'm curious why it needed such a large angle of attack to take off and land.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Very nice work! Did you add or change anything on this kit?

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Nicely done.  Thanks for posting.  I've always been fascinated by the looks of this plane.  I've read that it was very challenging to fly.

Very nice rendition, Darren!

Very nice!  Curious how the pilots saw the deck when landing!

Visibility for the F7U was actually quite good.  Handling, not so much.  As some pilots said, the engines "put out less heat than Westinghouse's toasters."  Smile

Very nice!  Curious how the pilots saw the deck when landing!  Which kit is that?  Hobbycraft?

Thanks,

John
