How would I do this?
Posted by roadkill_275 on Sunday, March 28, 2004 1:10 PM
I am contemplating doing a model of the Japanese P-40E in my sig. What I would like to know is how would I go about doing the lightning bolt? I don't think I could mask it out and I don't know if I could get a decal to conform to the curves unless I cut it up to make it fit. This is the only thing that is stopping me from doing this.

the way i would do it is to paint the area yellow first and then make a lightning bolt mask from masking tape and then apply it to the model then paint the green.
hope this helps.

I would go with the decal idea. Some Solvaset or MicroSet should get it to lay into any curves.

Greg's idea is good. Maybe try using some frisket film to make your mask. Also might just look into aftermarket decal sheets - you might find the markings you are looking for and can convert them.

Thanks for the help. This project will be started sometime in August, yes, I'm that far behind on my projects. Probably need to spend more time modeling than yaking, nah, wheres the fun in that?

you could cut it out of a yellow decal sheet and apply with MicroSet or what have you, and in fact I think that would probably be easier, but then I have to wonder if it would cover the green very well at all? And if not, then you're looking at having to double up, or putting a yellow one over a white one, and then it starts to sound like more work....

Now I've confused MYSELF and it's not even my project! D'oh!

That's alright kolja, take two asprin and don't think aboout it for a while. I've given it some thought and I think Swannys' idea is the better one. except I think I'll spray the yellow first and then the green. I'm worried about that stab root though. the picture looks like it covers the root, but then again I'm not sure. I may fudge it a little and make it work. Actually on further review (can't seem to get football off my mind) it looks like the yellow may be cut out around the root. If thats the case then I created a problem out of nowhere. Ah well, not enough caffeine in my system at the time.

Sorry Gregers, just noticed you also said it like I think I may do it.

Hiya Roadkill. one other bit of advice. paint it white before the yellow, the yellow will "take" much better and be brighter. looking at the pic of the P40 i would guess that the horizontal stab root goes over the yellow.
hope this helps.

"Stab root" = This is point were the rear wing, or horizontal stabilizer enters the body of the aircraft. Sometimes on helicopter they are also refered to as elevators.

Gotcha! My flight instructors always went on about our plane's 'empanage' and how it was basically the ass-end of the thing. Now I have a technical term to add to it! Big Smile [:D]
