Stikpusher and keavdog, I actually did not know that about the markings. The limited research I did indicated this was the highest scoring squadron flying Crusaders in Vietnam. That is good to know that the markings represent that.

Nice job! Yes the molds were originally by Monogram and date back 35 years or so give or take a few. The Crusader was quite a fighter. The “last of the gunfighters”.

keavdog, the ventral fin markings are the squadron scoreboard for Mig kills.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Nice looking workhorse!  Do you know what the markings on the ventral fins represent?

Thanks,

John

Nice work, Stephen.  The wing was raised to increase its incidence for landing without a high nose attitude like the F7U had.  It wasn't used as an air brake.

Amazing job with that kit. The F-8 is on my list of planes I want to build and that looks amazing. What's your opinion of current Monogram or Revell kits? Since I got back into modeling I have mainly bought Tamiya, Academy Hasegawa, Dragon and other brands but haven't touched the previous two since I was a teen.

Revell F-8E Crusader 1-48

Here is one of my latest completed builds, the F-8E Crusader.  I don't know if this kit began life as a Monogram release or if it was always a Revell release, but it has a lot of the fit and flash features of an aging kit that is nearing the end of its mold's useful life.

Here is the kit.

I built the ride of Lt. Commander Tim Hubbard, of the VF-211 "Checkmates" squadron. This squadron was the highest scoring F-8 squadron of the Vietnam War.  I liked the relatively simple markings that still had a good flash of color.  Completed with a variety of Model Master enamels and Tamiya colors.  The exterior paint job is decanted Tamiya spray can paint - insignia white for the underside and light gray for the upper surfaces. Weathering with a Flory dark dirt wash, Tamiya weathering compounds and ground pastels.

The kit has some fit issues but I have actually seen far worse.  I did a lot of dry fitting prior to actual construction, and then took my time getting the long fuselage halves mated.  The wing slides into the upper half of the fuselage - on a real Crusader, the wing is also serves as an airbrake (I think) but Revell (Monogram?) did not include that option in its kit.  I chose not to attempt to scratch that detail.

All in all I think I did a decent job on this one.  The Crusader would not make any list I would compile of favorite aircraft.  I think it's a fairly ugly bird, probably the reason I'd never before built one.  It should look good on my jet display shelf, though.
