The year was 1978. I was in college and had been building many model kits. All the flight ones were hanging from my bedroom ceiling. I remember this one kit that was not from a real aircraft or TV/movie, but I seem to remember it has some UFO reference or something. It consisted of two air/space craft. The big one looks similar to the X3. but had a docking bay in the tail where the little (Scout?) ship could "attach" with only the nose inside the "mothership." It is long lost but I am rebuilding all those lost ships and this one is unknown and no google search or search of model history has turned up any clues.
Before you say "Lief Erickson." NO! It's not. Please look at the photo where is shows part of the ship and tell me if you have any clue. Thanks.
You may be thinking of the AMT Interplanetary UFO Mystery Ship.

A little more info on the first photo.
The phaser on the wall is made out of balsa and other materials. I made it from plans in "The Making ot Star Trek" The Poster upper right was promo art for the then thought to be second series which never happened. I added "firing lasers" Darth Vader's Tie Fighter - Basically two red diodes attached to a 555 oscillator circuit and 9V battery. with a switch that activated it. All designed and built by me to enhance the model. The only thing I have left from this room is a few of the blueprints [mounted along the wall] that weren't completely destroyed. What's not in this photo is the Mig and F4 dog fighting that I built and mounted. The F4 had fired Heat seakers at the migs. They were suspended on fish line [like all the other ships and planes] and I used cotton balls stretched along the line behind the missles to simulate exhaust plumes.

NOPE! That's the Lief Erickson. My ship was nothing like that, other than there was a big and a little ship.

Sorry I couldn't help. Try posting this in the sci fi section of the forum instead of here in the military aircraft section. Someone may be of more assistance there.

Thanks. I couldn't remember if it was supposed to be a fighter or a ufo. 39 years is a LONG time.
Could this be what you're looking for?

Me too. I saw one on ebay for $299.99.
NOPE!
If Monogram didn't get the molds when they bought out Aurora, they're probably long gone. Rumor has it that a lot of the Aurora molds were lost in a train accident when they were being shipped to Monogram.
Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.
I found mine in a box we packed up 12 years ago when we moved into our current house.
