I picked up this kit on clearance at Hobby Lobby for like 15 bucks. I normally don't do 1/144 scale stuff. If I do it's gigantic aircraft like the B-52/C-17/C-5. Those are the only 3 I've done in that scale. I figured this would be a nice quick build over the holiday weekend. I'm waiting for a particular kit to come in the mail that I've been dying to get my hands on for some reason, and it will be here Tuesday. So I couldn't have something taking up the bench.
The kit contents. Not a whole lot.
There is no interior detail what so ever. Put the front landing gear together, put it in the fuselage and join the halves, that's it.
Glue on the wings and stabilizers.
Glue in the windscreen.
Rear landing gear together.
I left off with that for now. I've got engines to put together, and a bit of body work to do and she'll be ready for paint. Hopefully I can have it ready for paint by the end of the day.
Picked up this one, as well as the 130-J-30 on their clearance too. Will be interesting to see how well it comes together for you.
Did you have to add any weight to the nose to keep her from being a tail sitter?

I missed out on the C-130. Was a little irked cause I just wasn't willing to pay full price for such an itty bitty Herc, lol.
Yea I did add some weight to the front, instructions call for 1/2oz. I just taped some pennies together and put them in there. I need to get some BB's or something, lol.
I picked up some 1/4 oz fishing sinkers at the local big box store, bullet shape. Not that expensive and use 5 min epoxy to secure them. Plus you can beat them to shape to fit if needed.

I had some of those, and used them, and of course forgot to get more, lol. If I don't write it down consider it forgotten.
Little bit more progress for today. Engines ready for paint. The middle section needs to be aircraft grey, and the rest of the plane is aluminum. Since I'm using metalizer and I'm well aware that you can't mask over top of it I'm painting the other colors first, and then will mask those areas off when it comes time for aluminum.
Plane just about ready for paint. I did a lot of sanding, and only used a tiny bit of putty. Can't use primer with the metalizer, so I didn't want to go crazy with putty.
Can't really tell, but engines painted aircraft grey.
Painted the required sections black.
Tomorrow I will attach the engines, mask off those painted areas, and lay down the aluminum.
I hope you put in lots and lots of nose weight. I recently built that kit, and stuffed a lot of weight in nose, but it still turned out to be a tail sitter. I had to make a base and glue model down to base :-(

Don't overlook the mundane. I like to use a hex head bolt stacked with nuts. Say 1/4" by 1" bolt. Has lots of flat surfaces to glue with. Weighs a chunk and costs very little, like a quarter or so.
Here's a real junk pile. One of those shelf standards and a 3/8" nut in an F-3D.
Good looking model, Keyda. You have a pretty pro set up there too.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Don Stauffer, I put a stack of pennies in there, 8 or so I think, so hopefully it is enough. I'll find out soon enough!
GMorrison, I have a ton of nuts and bolts floating around in the garage, and I would have never thought of using them as weight! I'll have to gather some up and bring them in. Thanks! My work area has gotten much bigger since I started at the dinning room table, lol.
All ready for paint! I had to add a small amount of putty to the engine pylons. There was a few small gaps. I'm not looking for perfection or anything, just kind of a quick build to keep me busy for a few days.
She's not a tail sitter! Lol. I should of entered this into the weekend group build, but I had no idea I'd get it done this fast.
On display. I'll probably land up moving it at some point so its over with the rest of the 1/144 scale planes.
Very nicely done for a quick build while waiting on Tuesday.
Thinking of doing mine as an inflight bird hooked up transfering JP-4 to the Minicraft B-52 that is in progress, sitting on the fridge of doom.
Very nice. Looks like you got them all to touch the ground at the same time. No little feat there.
A little CC- the business ends of the engines would benefit from some black, esp. the out ends.
Thanks Goldhammer! I still have two more days to wait, lol. I do have a little Bearcat that probably wouldn't take me long.
GMorrison, I got lucky with the wheels. I think one or two might be just hovering, but you can't see it unless you are looking from a certain angle. I've only tried my hand at weathering once, I'm usually a "fresh from the factory" builder, lol. I think once I get more practice with my Iwata airbrush I will try my hand at adding little touches like exhaust smoke stains, and what not. This build was just a quick one to keep me occupied for a few days.
Kewl! I've been into the big jets lately doing airliners and freight etc. I love this scale and 1:200 for these big planes and they are so fun and quick to build. Turned out nice!
Thanks,
John
I wish I progressed as fast as you have K, nice build, and in a weekend!

I have this same one in my pile as well! I bought a B2 to do an in flight display with it, then realized, this is an early model 135....I may still do it that way, my son won't know the difference when it's hanging from his ceiling! Lol
Nice quick build! Looks great!

Thanks keavdog! It was a nice quick little build. No interior to mess with at all. Kind of nice to take a break from detailing cockpits and what not.
templar1099, Thanks, I have no life, lol. Stay at home Mom, and it's winter time. I am trying to avoid leaving the house for the next week, it's going to be super cold out!
Justinryan215, I never even thought about doing a display like, I may have to do that in the future. I have a 1/72 scale one as well. Thank you!
