I came in to this year with the intent of building nothing but U.S. warbirds, but some time about June I started seeing previews to the movie Dunkirk with its wonderful Spitfires, so I modified the year to be Allied warbirds.
Started off with a Checkerboard clan (all 1/48 - P-40 is AMT/Ertl, P-47 is Tamiya, P-51 is Hasagawa)
Grabeski's P-47D (Tamiya 1/48)
P-40E (either the builder or the kit allowed for no wing dyhedral, thinking a combination of both - Squadron re-issue of AMT/Ertl 1/48)
B-58A (ancient Monogram 1/121 kit with working features disabled) - the kit decals were in really bad shape and I could not source properly scaled decals, including the SAC stripe typically found on the forward fuselage, but I chalked that up as something to live with having bought such an old kit
PV-1 Ventura (Revell 1/48)
Spitfire (Mk. I is Revell 1/32 with a Tamiya pilot figure, Mk. IXe is Tamiya 1/32)
B-24D Liberator (Monogram 1/48 built as an assembly ship that looks a bit like a loaf of Wonder bread)
A-4M Skyhawk (Hasagawa 1/48)
A-7A Corsair II (HobbyBoss 1/48)
F-8E Crusader (Monogram 1/48)
The Tamiya Spitfire and Tamiya P-47s were the best kits I opened up this year. The Revell PV-1 was also a really good kit, especially when comparing the price of that kit against those Tamiya kits. For pure nostalgia I really enjoyed the old Monogram B-58 and Revell Spitfire Mk. I whereas those AMT/ERTL P-40s were just a hair better than a steaming pile of ... Then I posted the finishing jets in order of best to worst, but that F-8 was not a terrible kit although it came with about the worst instruction manual I have ever seen (for instance, it completely neglected even mentioning the part that forms the "ceiling" of the air intake).
So turning my attention to 2018, I've decided to go to the Dark Side and build only Axis subjects. First up will be a Tamiya A6M5 Zero in 1/32, and I plan to close out the year with a Pearl Harbor build of a Hasagawa Kate and Val, and a Tamiya Zero in 1/48. In between is still to be determined, but I have a bunch of good candidates in my stash (Hobby Boss Bv-141 and Monogram Pro-Modeler Ar-234C are definitely making it to the bench this year).
