hellcat help
Posted by pingtang on Sunday, March 28, 2004 10:50 PM
Gidday

I am about to start work on a hasegawa F6F-5 hellcat and was maybe looking at adding some extra details and was wondering if there was anyone one out there who knows what sets are available. Also, what sort of prep work is needed if I was too put a resin engine or cockpit in it? Do I need to make many modifications to the kit?
There are two different P&W R-2800 engines available from aires (early and late versions). Which one would be appropriate for a F6F-5.
One final question, does anyone know where i can find some info (pictures maybe) on hellcat markings (maybe during the midway battle period) and who makes decals for these (i'd like to build one in the tri-colour scheme).
If you have links to any info it would be great if you could share them (any help with installing resin parts would be great too, I've never really worked with the stuff).

Thanks very much

Hi Pingtang,
I'm not sure which scale you're working in, but for 1/72 aires, eduard and I believe verlinden all make detail sets for the Hellcat. Not sure about the engine question, the later engine (R2800-10w, with water/alcohol injection) should be correct for all Hellcats (-3s and-5s) subsequent to Bureau number 40633.
As for Hellcats at Midway, I don't think there were any. I believe the US navy started taking delivery of Hellcats in September of 1942, so there shouldn't have been any at Midway. Also, I 'm pretty sure that no -5s were delivered in the three color scheme. Someone may know better, but the photos of all the early -5s I've ever seen, even those that retained the rear windows were all painted in the single color scheme.
For the resin, I find that stuff noxious, I wear a mask when I'm sawing the stuff. You'll need a razor saw. It can also be really brittle so be careful not to snap it. You'll have to use superglue instead of plastic cement to attach parts. You'll have to test fit and reshape things and probably thin things down, especially if you're using resin cockpit sidewalls, other surgery maybe necessary depending on what you're installing.
Good luck with the model.

There were no Hellcats at Midway, the Avenger made it's non cerimonial debut, with a six plane detachment based on Midway, they were shot out of the sky. Only one made it through. It was badly damaged and probably never flew again. As for other that were there. The Wildcat, Devestater Dauntless and maybe the Vindicator and don't forget the PBY's that spotted the fleet. I don't know what if anything the Army, Navy or Marines had on Midway at the time. There might have been some B-17's but I don't know for sure.

I don't think that the Navy actually put the Hellcat's into service unitil 1943 or so. I could be wrong there to though. As for actuall versions of aircraft I cannot attest to that sorry.

If you can find it, Jaguar produced a beautiful detail set for Hasegawa's 1/48 kit. Jaguar's stuff is very well done, and price-friendly. Hope this helps.

Not sure what scale you are working in, but if it's 1/48 then take a look at the True Details resin cockpit interior available from Squadron. It fits very well and will be easier to find than the Jaguar set mentioned by Pix. I think Jaguar is OOP as I haven't seen anything from them in a long while. The late version engine would be appropriate for the F6F-5, but the kit engine isn't bad. As stated in several posts above, there were no F6F-5 Cats at Midway, or F6F-3's for that matter. Most if not all F6F-5's were painted in the overall gloss dark sea blue scheme. If you want to do a Tri-color scheme, best to do a F6F-3. There have been several releases of aftermarket decals for both versions but current availability is always iffy. Eagle Strike/Aeromaster recently released a couple of sheets for both versions so you might start there. The cowl on the Hasegawa kit has been dissed as being the wrong shape so if you really want to get crazy and spend some $, check out Cutting Edge for a replacement resin cowl.

I don't know it if will help you at all, but I got some good hellcat pics last week. It was under maintenance at the time, so nothing really really close, but the cowl was off and you can see the engine pretty well, I also got some good wingfold shots that might help. I can email them to you if you'd like. You can never have too many references.
