What was I thinking!!

Man am I stupid, I just wanted to let everybody know not to use 2 pairs of channellocks to open a jar of paint. The bottle will bust, all over your church clothes. I am laughing my head off, so did my wife.

Also don't try beating the jar on the countertop to open it, I had the same results. Is there a safe way to open a stuck lid? Without painting the countertop, me and the cat? BTW the cat is still PO'd with me, and its been two months. Actually I thought she looked good with that big patch of sea blue on her back. Very colourful.

Set the bottle upside down and pour a little lacquer thinner where cap and bottle meet. Wait a few minutes and it should remove with a lot less pressure.

I bought this jar opener deal in Micro-Mark, that works pretty well, for around $6-$7.00. Went to the .99 cent store a week later to pick up some Q-tips, there it was for a dollar!!! Damn.

If I get one that's stuck, I use one of the smaller size Craftsman Strap wrenches (with the rubber belt)

Works everytime!

I use rubber bands, wrap em up around the bottle top and around the bottle.

Easiest way to open a stuck lid is to take a lighter and quickly run the flame around the threads on the cap. Don't hold it there any longer than it takes to just warm the threads and then the lid will come right off. Once the lid is off clean the threads with a rag and lacquer thinner so you will not have the problem repeat. As a point of routine maintenance, always wipe off jar threads before putting cap back on - especially if you just poured some paint out of the jar.

Jeez, guys, all you have to do is blow hot air from a hair dryer on the bottle for a few minutes, or soak it in very hot water for a few minutes. Loosens the lid every single time, plus heats up the paint for better airbrushing. No flames, and no shattering.

And, don't paint while wearing good clothes. Eight Ball [8]

"And, don't paint while wearing good clothes. "
EXACTLY!!!
Well I"ve done the same many times. I actually still do, but I'm just much more careful now. Haven't had a problem.
Warm water also works every time, but I'm usually too lazy to run upstairs where I have a tap, so I just risk it :)

Just out of curiosity, b25fan, do you stir or shake your paint? I found out that stirring the paint rather than shaking it greatly reduces the incidence of "stuck cap syndrome." Years ago, I used to shake the paint and would often have to deal with the stuck bottle tops, but since I began stirring, it's been a long time since I've had to look for the pliers to wrench the top off.

And I've been wondering what to do with that little pot of Future.

The one that I really needed to open, and didn't have another spare AB jar to use!

Oh well at least I didn't Future myself or the kids.

i stir my acrylics, and shake my enamels. The problem was that bottle hadn't been opened since 1999 and i guess i didn't clean the threads off before i closed it. The paint was still good though as i was brushing it off the table and onto my plane. lolBig Smile [:D]. had to get it up before it dried too long and scrubbing would have to be done.

Somehow the thought ran through my mind, better your clothes than your models. Or is that being too hard core? lol

Dear b25fan,

Ever stirred one of those little Humbrol tinlets...with a dremel tool?
Oh yeah, I chucked in a little paint stirring bit in, and wound her up!
Well, that little motor ran away from me, flared out the metal shaft and splattered paint everywhere....it was red paint too. I too came to the conclusion, what was I thinking? Big Smile [:D]

Acrylics should be stirred and not shaken, the opposite of 007's martinis.
