I'm interested in adding a P-40 to my collection and would like recommendations on a kit that has good details and quality fit. I recently finished the Academy P-40C which was a nice kit but not as nice as some of the Tamiya kits I've been working on lately. I'm not a fan of their propellar assembly and the details are a little sparse. Overall the Academy feels a little cheap. I'd like to find a good quality kit at a reasonable price.. ie under $30 if possible. I saw the Hasegawa kit for sale, but I've never worked on one. How are they?
For the P-40B, Airfix' 1/48 kit is a good choice. It fits your price range, and it has nice detail, right out of the box. Hyperscalers will gretz about it, but ignore them.
I still like the old Monogram kit, too, still issued today under the Revell label. It still stands up well, is a quick build, and can be found very cheap on the second-hand market, if you don't want to buy a newer boxing at retail. I prefer older boxings of Monogram (and Revell) pre-merger kits, made when the dies were newer.
I got the Bronco kit of the P-40B, too, but it's a little more expensive, and it's a little more complicated to build, that is, some assemblies are broken down more, than with either Airfix or Monogram.
I can't offer any advice on P-40E kits. I have a bunch of bagged AMT kits in my stash, but haven't built any of them. The kits look pretty good, but I can't speak to how the build might go. I got them on the second-hand market, too.
I'm sure others will be able to offer more advice, but I hope that helps!
Best regards,
Brad
