Academy 1/48 Mirage IIIR
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 1:05 PM

Actually, this kit was originally molded by Fujimi, and cloned by Academy, is 1/50 and not 1/48 scale, and I modified it into a IIIRD variant. I started this for the “Weekend Madness” GB, but came up short. Most likely due to me adding things like the rear half of the engine and landing gear wheel wells (empty holes in the kit). As well as a new IP and bang seat in the cockpit. Decals were cobbled together from various sources in my stash to show a Mirage IIIRD of EC 3/33 in the early to mid 80’s. I completed 90% of the work within the 48 hour limit of the GB, but still needed a few extra hours to complete this. The final results are ok, but show lots of evidence of rushing.

I added the afterburner section from an Eduard Mirage III that I am replacing on that kit

and I added the nose Doppler radar bulge from an ESCI kit that was in my spares bin. I also scratched up new nose probes and modified the shape of the kit pitot tube. This kit camera windows were more empty holes, so Krystal Klear was used for the windows

and posed with my ESCI 1/48 Mirage IIIEA to show the scale difference

Thanks for looking... my first completion of 2018... woohoo!!!

LOL! Thanks! And I have two more nearly done to get me to that mark... of course only one of the three so far has any chance of competing and placing...

I’m ecstatic that you took the extra time to enhance your Mirage.  Although you did not meet the weekend GB deadline, you definately made a extended effort and it definately shows!

Nice looking Mirage, Stik.

I echo the congrats on first 2018 finish, and interesting to see what that difference between 1/48 and 1/50 looks like.

Merci TJ! And thanks to you Toshi & Greg.

Toshi, I am glad that I put the extra stuff into this build, but feel I shortchanged that effort due to trying to squeeze it into the 48 hours. Had I done this at a normal pace with no deadline, the end result would have removed all those rough edges that I bulled on thru. Live and learn.

Greg, it is indeed interesting to see the side by side difference between 1/50 and 1/48. Much like seeing 1/32 and 1/35 side by side. The external detail is superior on the Fujimi/ Academy kit with nice recessed detail, but the overall detail and interior of the ESCI kit is way better. The doppler radar bulge and bang seat actually came from this ESCI build as I did not use them on it.
