Do335 1:48 Tamiya - Finished
Posted by Kien on Sunday, January 28, 2018 5:50 PM

Hello,

I just finished a Tamiya Dornier 335 in 1:48 scale, this was a great kit... and I'm sure I'll be making more 1:48 instead of 1:72. The model was built strictly OOB, with only seatbelts added with putty. The model was painted with tamiya acrylics. I made a mistake on the camo... the colors are inverted. The tamiya paint chart is a bit off and shows the rlm 81 braunviolet as a very green color, so when I went to airbrush, I painted the green color where the braunviolet was supposed to be. I didn't feel like repainting the whole thing, I got over the mistake. Anyways, the model was masked with eduard canopy masks and then weathered with only oil paints. I wanted to test the versatility of oil paints and see all the things I could do with them, I used abteilung 502. I made a black/brown wash of thinned down oil paint and started weathering with that. Then I used some dark brown oil paint to brush and blend along the panel lines, it stands out more on the underside. Lastly, a silver prismacolor pencil for light chipping on the bomb, propellers, and leading edges of the wings.

Thanks for looking,

Kien

That's a beautifully built model. I see no flaws and I wouldn't have known about the reverse camo had you not mentioned it.  Good work Mate  Yes

Thanks for the all the comments. I have been trying out new techniques and building kits in a “trial and error“ way. I feel this way I’m not as worried to mess up a model, and it has really brought on new skills and ideas.

Crown Rn7:  I saw your Do335 on the ”last three builds” thread, it looks great. I think you got the rlm81 spot on.

I definitely wouldn't have noticed the paint variations.  The splinter camo still looks fantastic.  The underside really looks great too! Beer

One of my all-time favorite Luftwaffe aircraft. Excellent work on a fantastic kit. I built this one years and years ago, but your example is much better. I love the streaking you achieved with the oils. I may need to work on that technique myself.

Thanks for sharing this!

Oils are surely something you should try out. Many affects you can do with them, I did the streaking without thinner, just have a little on the brush and streak. You can use abt 502 oils, or Windsor newton artist oils as well. I use the abt 502.
