Doing decals today. The drone is really looking nice.
OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Thanks, Mongoose. Are you related to Tom McEwen of drag racing fame?
nope, no relation to Tom McEwen just a big fan and fellow drag racer! You’d think I’d build some but cars were just never my thing when it comes to models.
In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Yeah, Gamera, the pre-shading turned out much better than I expected. This drone is the first time I have ever used the technique. The pre-shading is actually more subtle than in the pictures. I edited the pictures to emphasize the pre-shading. I'm going to try pre-shading and maybe post shading on the Flying Leathernecks F6F-5 which is up next for paint.
Is this you raising hell?
The pre-shading looks cool to me!
I love colourful schemes like this, but haven't built any drones because it makes me depressed reminding me of how these beautiful warbirds are going to end their lives.
Guess it's better than the scrapyard though......
When I first saw the drones I was quite taken with the loud colors. The red and yellow Hellcat just spoke to me. Check this ramp shot. I don't know where this is at but most likely in California. My drone is number 12.
You know for a drone i think the high contrast is pretty sharp. My first impression was WOW, i like it gives the impression that it is an end of life plane.
So, I finished the red on the drone yesterday. Now it's red with a yellow tail. The colors are quite striking. This morning I am straying the airplane with several misting coats of Pledge. This is looking so good. I'm getting really excited. I also sprayed the little bits with Pledge. The landing gear and doors, the tail wheel and pitot. The drop tank. Later today or most likely in the morning I'll start putting the decals on. This is gonna look so good when it's finished.
Thanks, Toshi. I'm a little concerned that the pre-shading might look somewhat heavy handed. This is my first real try at pre-shading. Route62 suggested I give it another coat of the red but I've already unmasked the yellow. After I put the decals on I might try some post shading with some Insignia Red darkened a little. We'll see. Thanks for checking in, Toshi.
Excellent job on your preshading! Beautiful colors.

Hey, Baron. I'm building Otaki's 1/48 scale F6F-3. A splendid kit. Very good detail and a simple build. Assembling the kit didn't take very long, just a few days. Painting on the other hand. Below are three images showing the two colors for the drone: MM Insignia Red and MM Insignia Yellow. I'm going to let it sit until tomorrow then I'll shoot it with some Pledge to seal the paint.
Great build, a subject that doesn't get done very often at all, but looks really cool! Which kit are you using for this?
Some of the red is done. The underside, the drop tank and various other bits. I'll do the topside after I have a sandwich. I'm feeling a little peckish right now.
Looks like it's time to shoot some red...
After Route62 and I compare notes tomorrow, I'll begin spraying the red. I have to be sure not to cover up the pre-shading completely when I do.
I am very interested in seeing the results of your shading and building. That Battle of Palmdale was a pretty interesting read. I can't imagine something like that happening today. Conspiracy theorists, preppers and doomsday believers would have a field day. Hard to beleive those rockets were that faulty or that those two truck crewmen were so lucky to leave when they did.
I wanted to keep the color scheme simple because if my inexperience. I also plan to do what I hope is some convincing weathering on the finished airplane. Some of these drones really looked nasty by the end of their service lives. This particular drone was used during Operations Crossroads to monitor the nuclear explosion over Bikini Atoll in 1946.
Thats going to be nice and colourful. Looking forwardto seeing more of this.

Yeah, seasick, I read about the Battle of Palmdale when I was researching this project. I think that Mr. Murphy took cocntrol of the drone because he wanted to log some Hellcat stick time.
Bish, the finished colors for the drone are Insignia Yellow for the tail and Insignia Red for the rest of the airplane.
seasick Makes me think about the Battle of Palmdale
Makes me think about the Battle of Palmdale
Blimey, that didn't turn out very well did it. The damn rockets did more damage than the plane. Interesting read, thanks for posting the linkl.
Interesting subject frank, whats the final colour going to be.
Chasing the ultimate build.
And the drone goes on. I attempted a technique I really hadn't tried yet: Pre shading. On the advice of Route62, I pre shaded the Hellcat with MM Leather enamel rather than a darker color. I had only experimented with pre shading on an old half finished Thunderbolt a few months ago but thought I'd give the technique a real go on the drone. These airplanes did not lead a very glamerous life. They were pretty tattered and worn by the time the end came. Anyway, this how far I've gotten. It's going to sit for a couple of days before I mask for the red. In the meantime, I'll press on with the Flying Leathernecks F6F-5 Hellcat.
