Thoughts on a Revell's Hustler
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 29, 2004 8:49 PM
Does anyone have any experience with this kit in 1/48? I swore to myself that I would never by another (newer) Revell Monogram kit but, this is from Revell Germany.

Does it have the raised panel lines also?

I bought the germany kit about two months ago, and it has raised panel lines. It looks to be a pretty good kit.

Yes, it does have the raised panel lines and the plastic is the same as all the previous releases including the casting scar right in front of the cockpit. Shortfalls are lack of decent burner cans, mediocre cockpit and not so great print quality on the decals. Mike Grant designs has a replacement set of decals and stencils that are truely great and Fox One does a nice set for it also. IIRC there are resin F-14 burner cans that can be incorporated into the kit to improve the engines.

Thanks for the input all!

I Tivo'd the Hustler special on Discovery Wings and thought it would be a good subject to model.

Although I have some reservations about doing a raised panel kit, this seems to be the only one available in 1/48 scale (or at least the only one I have seen)

Swanny's given you some good info, but unfortunately both the Fox One & Mike Grant Decals B-58 sheet are no longer available. Also, I think swanny meant to type F-4 & not F-14 for the engine nozzles, as the B-58 used the J-79 engines, same as the Phantoms.

Thanks Chris - jets are not my specialty but I knew it was one of those. While the Mike Grant decals are not commonly availible if you ask him, Mike will run off a set for you on the ALPS.
Almost forgot - there is a back seat set availible from Engines and Things if you are interested. A review of the set is on my site.

I built the Monogram Hustler back in the '80's, was alittle disappointed that only the front cockpit was modeled, but I closed the canopy, couldn't see much cockpit anyway. An aftermarket set of exhaust nozzles and decals would dress this kit up nicley.

Erock, don't let the raised panel lines get in your way of enjoying this wonderful kit (or any kit for that matter). It builds into one big sweet bird. When it's sitting on your shelf you won't notice the raised lines. You don't want to tell yourself ten years from now "I wish I had that B-58 in my collection but I'm glad I didn't get it because the panel lines were raised."

I have that kit in my TO-DO shelf now.

What is the name of that aftermarket set of exhaust nozzles that might work on the Hustler?

If you don't mind the smaller scale, you could always get the Testors/ Italeri 1/72 B-58. It's a much better kit, with good interior detail in all 3 crew modules, engraved panel lines, excellent u/c detail, and a good decal sheet. It's also (obviously) a lot smaller than the Monogram Hustler, a lot cheaper, and easier to display on the shelf!

Aires makes a set of 48th resin J-79 nozzles. They are designed for the Hasegawa F-4 line, but they should work nicely.

I've got 2 of those monogram kits in the to do pile - gotta have one in SEA. Erock, while you're at it see if you can nail the Aerofax book on the 58 (jay miller) it's a great reference.

Swanny and ch47guy, thanks for the tips.

didnt Italeri do a 1/48th scale hustler along with a TB58 boomerang as well?
I did the 72nd 58 and it is really nice, with recessed panel lines and a nice weapon choice too.

It's Revellogram. Monogram's models in Revell boxes. Tell me this. How many old Revell kits show up in Monogram boxes! Catch my drift!

Oggy - no, Italeri/ Testors never did a 1/48 Hustler. Italeri did do a 1/72 TB-58 ( I have one on my 'to do' pile), which has a realy attractive red/white/natural metal colour scheme option, and which you could also (with suitable research) do as the XB-70 chase plane.

I particuarly liked the B.63 nuclear gravity bombs in the Italeri 1/72 Hustler. One day, they're going to make their way into the weapons bay of a Revell Arado E.555! You know, the one that has to rely on the Heinkel He.177 tanker showing up in order to get back from New York!

Well, the reason I'm a bit taken by the raised panel lines, isn't so much of appearance but, I'm still a bit of a heavy handed sander. I'm just getting my technique down, for rescribing. I have yet to rescribe raised lines.

However, I really do like this subject and am going to order it. Wink [;)]

Thanks again for your opinions about it!

Erok - re-scribing panel lines is not too difficult, if you are patient and not heavy-handed. There is lots of advice on this subject, in FSM and on the web. Experiment with various different tools, and find one which suit you. I like a sewing needle in a pin vice, but opinions differ. At the risk of stating the obvious, buy a cheap kit from the 1970s or early 1980s, which will have raised panel lines, and practice on that first.

Good luck!

Chris.

Erock68 or anyone else:
You probably already have this somewhere on your favorites list but
HTTP://aeroweb.brooklyn.cuny.edu has some nice pics of a hustler on page 123 or so.
If you haven't been to that site then I should tell you that there are a couple of thousand photos to go through.

Hey Erock,

Great minds think (and view) alike! I watched the same show on Discovery wings too.
But it was the subsequent trip to the hobby shop where I saw the same kit hanging from the ceiling. It was beautifully done, in the red and white paint job.
Then I saw this kit offered in one of my catalogs, and well, I have one on order too! I'm looking forward to buliding it, good luck on yours!

The B 58 is one of the most beautiful bombers ever. I have the Revel no scale kit-built- and the 1/48 kit US Revel - unbuilt.

When Revel Inc merged with Mongram they intended that Revel would do aircraft models and Monogram cars.
