Gloss finish for Humbrol Paints
Posted by Big Jake on Sunday, May 20, 2018 8:28 PM

Hi All,

I'm ready to apply a gloss coat the the Aitfix 1/24th. scale DeHave, for the placement of the decals. What is the recommended glosscoat that can be used with Humbrol paints. Can testors Glosscoat be used?

Thanks

Jake

I use Humbrol's own gloss.  They also offer matte and satin.  It's worked fine.

I stay away from Testors gloss and dull coats due to bad expereinces with them. But yes, you can use them over Humbrol enamels. I much prefer the Humbrol products myself. But my prime go to gloss coat is Future, which I have used with no problems over Humbrol paints.

The more talented modelers ahead of me are right, but for convenience a coat of Testors Gloss Coat will do. I usually would use "Future", because I can then weather over it with mineral spirit based solutions.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I also use future but I have found that tamiya golss acrylic gives a very nice smooth gloss over the matt enamels. It seems to "gloss" in fewer coats than the future.

I thin my acrylic with isopro alcohol to airbrush it on.

As mentioned earlier, Testors “Dullcoat Clear Coat“ spray is most convinient and very efficient in as needed amounts.  Like most products, you’ll need to follow it’s description to the tee and or bad things will happen.
