Tool/Release Date Questions
Posted by Oxboy on Sunday, June 3, 2018 4:35 AM

Some questions for the community:

  1. Are kits released prior to say the year 2000 generally considered to subpar?
  2. Where is the best place to research kit original/retool release dates?
  3. How do I know the age of the actual unopened kit in my hands?  A kit may have been originally released in 1995, but the kit in my hands could be only a year or two old, right?
  4. How well do decals in unopened boxes age?  Does the glue/paper etc start deteriorating after say 10 years?

Thanks.

There are some kits from the 70's that are great builds. Scalemates.com is the best site to check on the timeline of a kit. And it tells you about all the releases and changes to a kit. I have kits that are 30 years old and the decals are fine. If they are stored correctly you shouldn't have a problem most of the time

Almost always the best way to evaluate a kit is to look for build reviews.  Don't be a kit age snob, there are some treasures out there.
