Has anyone built the Hindenburg Zepelin?

Yeah, I built two of those years and years ago (Akron and Macon). AMT, I believe.

Here's another one: Biiiiiiiig Testors imported vac Graf Zeppelin. 3 feet long, or thereabouts. Who was the real manufacturer?

I have a model (stuffed somewhere in a box!) of the US airship. I can't remember who the manufacturer was. It has decals for both the Akron and the Macon. (My father was on the Macon when it crashed off the coast of California in the early 30's!

Actually they were the exact same dimensions..804 ft in length by 135 ft diameter..

I remember the tractor props now. Wasn't it slightly larger overall as well?

The GZ II outwardly was nearly an identical twin to the Hindenburg, the only major difference being that it had forward facing "tractor" type props rather than the rear facing "pushers" found on the Hindenburg...

Revell also makes a Graf Zeppelin II plastic kit. As far as I can tell from the box, it's just the Hindenburg kit with different decals.
Not sure of the history, but wasn't GZ II a proposed sister ship of the Hindenburg? Essentially the same airship?

In other plastic news, I recently ran across an ancient kit of the R-101. Don't recall the maker...

Revell makes a kit of the Zeppelin NT. The envelope is done in three parts - really fun to aline. If you really want to have a great zeppelin model get the Aerobase model of the Graf Zeppelin - it is the zeppelin frame work without the covering or gas bags done in photo etch. I have one built and I am thinking about building another one, but put in the gas bags, then do a third with the skin over the frame work. I really need more hours in a day.

A PE set for the Revell kit would be great, eh?

I can score these at any "toys r us",or department store in Germany.I built an AMT Hindenburg some time in the mid-seventies.Love Zeppeins!Read "When Zeppelins flew",back in the ninth grade.Parents laughed when I said they would fly again!Guess what!They did!It's called ZEPPELIN NT!Straight outta Friedrichshaven!Gotta love it!!!!

All different shades of aluminum, I believe. Looks quite matte to me, though.

The Revell Hindengurg is a nice kit. Just need to replace those props with something not quite so thick!

Anybody build that older kit? A bit larger than the Revell...was it AMT?

What color would the gas sections of the Hindenburg be painted? All material I've seen is of pretty poor quality photos in B&W. It looks to be a semi-gloss color of something like duct-tape but not sure.

There's also and old Glencoe kit of the US Navy's Akron. It turns up on eBay as well from time to time. -Ed

I've been curious about airship models in general. I was wondering if anyone had ever built one, but didn't think there were any actual kits. I figured this would have had to be totally scratchbuilt. Interesting. I'm glad this question was posted.

I had watched a show on the History Channel - Weapons at War: Airships - and was really surprised. I knew about the Hindenburg and was aware that the US had a couple, but not to the extent this show portrays. I found it very interesting.

Yes, two clam shell halves, tail fins, 5 piece engines, 1 piece gondola. Makes a good looking model.
