The Trumpeter 1/48 Vampire FB.MK.9 has been completed. This was a nice build with very little issues. The only issue was the intake to the leading edge of the wing required filling and shaping. The decals were on the thin side and great care was required to get them into position but they did lay down nicely.

Moving forward on the Vampire. Flaps and landing gear finished, Cut out the intakes to add the more accurate vanes, and assembled the rest of the fuselage. The only real issue with fit was the intake mating to the leading wing edge. Filled and shaped to blend them together. Just finished painting the base coat. Have some more detail painting to do then on to the decals.

Completed the landing gear bays and now working on extending the flaps with the Eduard photo-etch parts. The flaps have been cut open and the parts have been dry fitted after the fuselage was assembled. Several years ago when I was in the UK on business, I had a chance to visit Duxford when planes were arriving for their annual show. A Hunter and Vampire from Sweden were in the pattern to land so I eagerly watched the proceedings. The Hunter landed normally, but just after the Vampire touched down there was a hail of sparks from the right main gear and the crash trucks started rolling. He blew a tire on touchdown - more excitement than I was looking for...

Hi,

I am eagerly following this too.  I also think the Vampire was a fascinating early jet, and have a kit at home that I havent gotten to yet.

Eagerly following this.  The Vampire is one of my favorite early jets.  Went to an airshow in about 1947.  There were two jet aerobatic teams there, one flying -86, the other, the other flying the Vampire.  The saber team flew at high speed, maneuvers took them far out and far up.  The Vampire team flew at lower airspeed and kept the show right in front of spectator area.  The turn rate was really amazing.

As the build progresses I have completed the cockpit and did some detailing of the landing gear bays and struts on the 1/48 scale Trumpeter Vampire. So far I am really enjoying this model. Dry fitting the fuselage looks like a very good fit.

The next build is a de Havilland Vampire jet of the RAF. It was the second jet to be flown by the RAF. It did not become operational until after World War II in 1946, but had a successful history with the RAF until the late 1950’s. I am using the Trumpeter kit with the Eduard detail set.
